Santa Sees Children Change

center Santa, Earl Tyler can
tell* you -it’s not all candy
canes, tinsel and ho, ho, ho.
"One boy about 8 years old
pulled out a cigarette lighter
and tried to set fire to my
whiskers,? Tyler remembers
of his first years on the job.
A 78-year-old ex-farmer,
Tyler says he’s seen changes
in the nation’s psyche mir-
rorpd in its children.
"They didn’t have any
discipline,” he recalls the
children of the 1960s. “They
didn’t know how to behave •
with Santa. We had that kind
of environment here at the
time.” i-

On the Lite Side—
“If you are a victim of cir-
cumstance, I don’t know how
you could have set yourself up
any better,” said Circuit
Judge David Roth, who found
Dunn innocent. _
Bingham, worried about -
prowlers in his yard, had ask-
ed police to keep an eye on the
place. While Dunn was on his
knees coaxing his cat to come
home, Weber County Deputy
Sheriff Archie Smith was wat-
ching from a motor home
across the street. ...

Dunn told the judge that as
he passed the stakeout, Smith
burst from the door and
shouted, “I’ve got you! ” Dupn
made a run for it, with Smith
in pursuit. Dunn told the judge
the wind in his ears kept him
from hearing Smith's shouts
of “Halt! Police!”
When Dunn got home after a
trip to the police station, his
cat was waiting for him on the
front steps.

cause the hairy tongue may
appear and disappear quickly
or it may persist for years.
Some alarm is
understandable when a pa-
rent is first aware of the con-
'dition since the tongue looks
like it is very abnormal and
since a tickling sensation may
be experienced each time the
patient swallows or any time
the tongue comes close to the
roof of the mouth.
••Hairy tongue” may vary in
color from white to yellow,
blue-green, or brown to black
and may be called black hairy
tongue. This is even more
alarming in appearance but is
the same condition.
Thia column deals
questiou concerning den-
tistry and Dental Care.
Readers are invited to send
written questions to Dental
Care, P.O. Box 358, Dublin, jta
Texas 7M4C.
Doctor Crabtree: I have a
friend who just yesterday had
a dental check-up and she said
she had a hairy tongue condi-
tion. Did I misunderstand or
does hair grow on. the tongue
’ sometimes?
Dear Reader: Yes a condi-
tion called “hairy tongue”
does exist but the hair-like
projections on the tongue are
not hair at aU. Actually they
are papillae that normally are
present on the tongue that
have greatly elongated. These
thread-like papillae are nor-
mally not noticeable and are
part of the taste mechanism
but if they elongate abnormal-
ly they appear as hair all over
the top of the tongue.
Some known causes of
“hairy tongue” are antibiotic
or steroid treatment, use of
certain mouthwashes, poor
oral hygiene, heavy smoking,
and - gastrointestinal
disorders. In these cases the
“hairy tongue” symptoms
disappear and the papillae
return to normal size within a
few weeks when the cause is
removed.
In other cases of unknown
