Parades, Rallies, Meals, Floats
And Other Homecoming Features
An array of contests, prizes, events, work, and memories lie
within the coming 36 hours for present students and those who will
be returning to Howard Payne to celebrate Homecoming, 1961.
One of the earliest homecomings in recent years, this weekend
promises to be colorful and different.
Freshmen should have just learned whether or not the winning
or — sshh: losing — of the Homecoming game will determine tfee
extent of wearing the green beanies. Tradition has stated that it
victory on the gridiron releases the freshmen from the slime caps,
except for other athletic events through the year. However, it had
recently been rumored that beanies might have to be worn longer
this year, because of the early Homecoming date. Dean of Students
Francis Miller said Monday that the question would be discussed
Thursday (yesterday) by the Student Personnel Committee and a
decision would be announced in chapel today.
The victory drum should be resounding across campus about
now, to continue unfil gametime tomorrow at 2 p.m. In the mean-
time, preparations, proceed in anticipation of the paradte tomorrow.
And while students are working on floats and campus displays,
the Student Association Senate is in charge of the "Spirit Feast"
scheduled for 5 p.m. this afternoon. A "come-as-you-are" type in-
formal meal, featuring sandwiches and a variety of desserts will be
served students in the Student Center, while the college dining hall
is to be used for the annual Man-of-the-Year Banquet, at 7 p.m.
Ex-students, alumni, faculty members and present students will
all gather at Mims Auditorium at 9 p.m. tonight for a pep rally and
the presentation of the 1961 Homecoming Queen. Mrs. Patsy Ridga-
way Crawford, the 1960 Homecoming Queen, will crown the new
royalty in the "Queen's Fantasy Land" program.
The traditional men's serenade at Veda Hodge Hall will see the
day out at midnight tonight.
Organizational floats will begin rolling in the Homecoming
parade at 11 a.m. tomorrow. With "Fantasy Land" the theme, such
titles as "Jack and the Bean Stalk," "The Cow Jumped Over The
Moon," "Humpty Dtimpty" and others will show the work of stu-
dents to exes and townspeople.
The winning floats will be paraded prior to the game with Texas
A&I at Lion Stadium tomorrow. Prizes are $75, $50 and $25; honor-
able mentions will not receive any monetary award. Visiting bands
will also be competing for awards.
Half-time ceremonies will include a performance by the
Howard Payne Yellow Jacket Band and the presentation of the
Man-of-the-Year and Homecoming Queen.
Concluding Homecoming activities tomorrow evening will be

Chapel at 8 p.m.
