DEAR POLLY — My brother brought back from the
Cape a beautiful concn shell but it smells terrible. I
have soaked it in ammonia and all sorts of cleaning
fluids but the pungent fish odor remains. If I do not get
help I am afraid it will go to waste — SAD SHELLER
DEAR SAD SHELLER — Perhaps the animal is still
in the shell. Soak it in liquid bleach for several days and
during that time swish the shell around to be sure the
bleach gets all the way down inside. When removed
rinse well with clear water and put outdoors to thor-
oughly dry in the air. Check for effect of the bleach on
the color of the shell.
Another remedy is to soak for a few days in full
strength robbing alcohol and then flush it out well with
clear water — POLLY

DEAR POLLY — Water stains on draperies disappear by
following these directions. Make a paste of baking soda and
WHITE vinegar and spread on the stains. Hang out in the sun
and then wash in suds to remove the stains — GRACE
DEAR READERS — I am sure many of you will welcome
this suggestion as we have been asked this question so many
times and I did not havq, a satisfactory solution. Grace wrote
that the paste dries very quickly so if there are many stains to
cover it to better to mix several small batches than too much
at one time. — POLLY
DEAR POLLY — I wonder if N.G.T who had mildew spots
on a beaded movie screen has ever tried using a commercial
mildew remover Spray it on and when it is dry the mildew
vanishes I do hope it works as well for her (or him) as it has
for me It is also great to use on grout around the bathtub. -

Muppeteer receives award
Jim Henson, creator of the
Muppets and a University of
Maryland graduate, recently
received his alma mater’s
Distinguished Alumnus
Award.
Accompanied by Kermit
the Frog and Sweetums, he
was appointed grand marshall 1
of the homecoming parade
and half-time activities of the
Maryland-North" Carolina
football game
The award was the second
hpnor bestowed on Henson by
the school tn as many years.
In May 1978 he was awarded
the honorary degree of Doctor
of Fine Arts
Henson, who was graduated
from the university in 1960,
credits much of his original
interest in puppeteering to the
puppetry class in which he
was enrolled as an undergrad-
uate His aptitude resulted in
his being hired by a local tele-
vision station in nearby Wash-
ington. DC. That, in turn,
eventually led to exposure for
Henson and the Muppets on
Sesame Street’’ and "The
Muppet Show.’’
This summer the Muppets
first 'eature-length film. "The
Muppet Movie.’’ was released
