. (AP) — Tonight’s annual Oil
Bowl football game — pitting
Oklahoma schoolboy all-stars
against some of the best from
Texas high school gridiron
teams — shapes up in the eyes
of one Texas coach as a "clas-
sic matchup" of size versus
speed.
The Sooners are favored to
end a five-game losing streak
in the long-running tradition
which finds the Texans
holding a 26-6-1 series lead.
“I expect a good football
game," said Texas Coach Lar-
ry Dippie of Amarillo. "It’s a
classic matchup — size versus
speed. This is one time I’m
hoping the hare will come up
on top.”
The Texans will rely on
rather have given him the
night off.
"My bullpen is about used
up aftar fivo games in three
days. But it helps ease the
pain, knowing that we took
four out of five, I’ll tell you
that,” the Detroit manager
said.

Speedsters J.C. Morris of

Mark McQueen of Temple.
Dippie and coaches Joe Bob
Tyler of Fort Worth and Pat
Smiley of Burkburnett said
each of the backs would see
heavy rushing duty.

The maestro gave the young
Rangers’ skipper a lesson
Thursday night as the Tigers
earned a 3-2 victory in a well-
played game that enabled De-
troit to win the tobgh, five-
going to win it,” Corrales said.
The Rangers took an early 2-
0 lead. Mickey Rivers led off
the first inning with a walk off
Chris, stole second and scored
on Richie Zisk’s RBI single.
Eric Soderholm opened the
Texas second with his ninth
homer of the year.
The Tigers got one run back
in the third. Lynn Jones led off
wfth'a double, took third on
Whitaker’s single and scored
on Alan Trammell’s fly ball to
center. ■«
Champ Summers tied it 2-2
leading off the fourth with his
12th homer, a towering blast

TIAA poll names TSU
as 'team to beat’ inJ9
Indications are that Tarleton State tmiversity will
be the team to beat this fall in the Texas In-
tercollegiate Athletic Association. The Texans,
coming off a fourth place NAIA natonal rating, have
■ been selected as the top team in a poll taken among
the conference’s sports information directors and
head football coaches.
The Texans, defending TIAA champions, receiver
25 of 30 possible points including five or six first
place votes. McMurry College and. Trinity
University split the second and third place voting
with 19 points each.
Buddy Fomes, head coach of the Texans, says he
is thrilled to be selected as the number one team.
“I think that puts our kids on the spot,” Fornes
commented. “That means we have to perform with
Fomes says that the returning lettermen learned
a lot last year about being “number one”. The TIAA
plays in a round robin set up and once the Texans
had gone through the first of the ’78 season in perfect
form, they became the targets of every one in the
league the second time arouhd. "
Fomes says he isn’t concerned the ranking might
make his Texans over-confident. He adds that “its
always better to be picked first than last.”
Austin College was ranked number four in the
TIAA poll with 13 points and Sul Ross State,
University was picked fifth with nine points. Lub-
bock Christian College, in their first year in the
TIAA, was ranked last with a total of five votes.
LCC will be ineligible to compete for the con-
ference crown this year, but will be in the running
for the championship in 1980.
Tarleton went undefeated in conference play in
1978. The Trinity Tigers were the only TIAA team to
come close and they battled the Texans to a 6-6 tie.
The Texans’ only loss last year came in the NAIA
Quarterfinals playoffs game against Findlay, Ohio.
Findlay dropped the Texans 13 to 6 ending their
playoff hopes.
game series, 4-1.
In the fifth inning, with the
score tied 2-2, Corrales stayed
too long with starter Doc Med-
ich, 5-6, and he paid for it as
Steve Kemp doubled home
Alan Trammell for what prov-
ed to be the winning run.
An inning later, the Rangers
loaded the bases on Tiger
starter Mike Chris, 2-0, with
nobody out, but Anderson was
able to rescue the rookie lef-
thander in time as he called
once again on rubber-armed ,
Aurelio Lopez who got out of
the inning on three pitches —
and a tremendous defensive
gem by Lou Whitaker.
“We blew this one,” Cor-
rales said. “All we can do is
