HOUSTON (AP) - Police
Chief Harry' Caldwell’s
emergency request for 10 new-
detective positions has been
approved by the City Council.
Caldwell made the request
after Houston recorded 17
murders last weekend, bring-
ing the year’s total to 383 com-
pared with 265 last year.
Most of the new detectives
will be assigned to the
homicide division, which now
has 66 detectives.
In seeking council approval
Tuesday, Frank Mancuso, the
mayor pro tern, said most of
the homicide detectives are
exhausted from the heavy
workload.
“Harry said he needed ap-
proval on an emergency basis
and in view of what happened
over the weekend that was
enough said,” Mancuso said.

registrar John Whiting has
released the schedule for night
course offerings at the
university saying that,
“although there are a lot of
graduate student courses in
the schedule, there are also a
variety of courses that will be
of interest to the community
as well.”
Whiting cited the Safety
Engineering course as one
offering that should be of
particular interest to area
businesses. The Safety .
Engineering course is one of
three Industrial Education
courses being offered at night.
Courses are being offered
under 21 different department
headings from Agriculture
and Business to Arts and
Sciences.
Most of the courses are
scheduled for one night a
week, Monday 1 through
Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m.
