European countries where the
dollar is now worth less than
before its devaluation. This
means that the cost of taking
care of immigrants in transit will
go up. Considering that tqgs of
thousands of Soviet Jews^hist

Agency in Vienna when they
leave Russia and before they are
flown to Israel, the difference in
the cost of their stay in Vienna
may run into several million
dollars. The same is true with
regard to Jews who come from
Morocco and other Moslem
countries and are sheltered
temporarily in transit centers in
France before they proceed to
Israel.

leaders attending the conference
voted to conduct a campaign to

Mrs. Schenk explained that
“traditionally, we concentrate
on raising funds to maintain our
medical and educational
institutions in Israel. However,
the equipment of a fully new
hospital facility is of such
magnitude — and costs have
escalated 30 percent since we
undertook to rebuild this
hospital which we regained in
the Six-Day War in 1967 — that
we are now seeking
contributions of linens.

The devaluation of the American
dollar has created severe
problems for American Jewish
organizations conducting relief
and rehabilitation work in
overseas countries; especially for
the Joint Distribution
Committee, the United Hias, and
ORT.
Also affected to a
considerable extent by the
devaluation of the dollar is the
Jewish Agency. This, despite the
fact that the Jewish Agency'
spends most of its dollars —
which it receives from the
United Jewish Appeal funds — in
Israel, where the local currency
has been adjusted to the
devalued dollar.

standing ovations before and
after she spoke. Mrs. Meir was
welcomed by Mayor John V.

woman whose life is a challenge
to the conscience of our time.”
The Premier declared: “We

cannot depend on anyone else in
the world except ourselves. We
are extremely happy that we
have never gone to any of our
friends, not even to this country,
and asked for the help of one
single soldier.”
Continuing, Mrs. Meir stated
that the blood spilled in defense
of Israel has been the blood of
Israelis. The Israeli leader said
Israel wanted “peace above all,
but not peace at any price.”
At another meeting, Mrs.
