(Bob) Graves of Guthrie
announce the arrival of a daugh-
ter born Feb. 22, 3:29 in West
Texas Hospital, Lubbock. She
weighed 7 lbs, 2 1/2 ozs., and
has been named Nancy Jo. She
has a sister, Cherry Ann, to
welcome her home.
Paternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Hauley Graves of
Guthrie. Maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Hulon Egger
of Mullin. Great grandparents
include Mrs. Babe Graves of
Guthrie, Mrs. Frank Forrest
of Blum, Mrs. L.D. Egger of
Mullin, and Mrs. Nina Wood

advisory committee, H.M.
Cantrell lives in Childress and
B.F. Hobson is still a Paducah
resident. The other four were
the late W.C. Briggs, C.A.
Carlock and C.L. Loftis.
When the work was merged
into the New Deal, Mrs. Davis
was trained in Austin to set
up the office which had 614
families on its relief roll. All
of her work throughout the
years was without pay; all on
a volunteer basis. She said
the only money she ever re-
ceived for her work was the
$100 the Lions Club gave her
in appreciation of her efforts.
Though she was away from
home much of the time, her
husband, who shared her
enthusiasm for her work, never
complained but was always un-
derstanding and helped in any
way he could to make it easier sidered W work beneath me

in-law in Fayetteville, Ark.,

Thursday for Ark. They visit-
ed Thursday night in Okla. City
with Mrs. Sigrid Dalton. They
visited in Alma, Ark., with Mrs.
Cecil Clark in Parksville, Ark.,
with Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Price
and Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Brown,
David and Ricky.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Rose have
been to Galveston for Cecil to
have a check-up.
Mrs. Hugh Smith and Ricky
of Albuquerque, N.M., visited
Thursday and Friday with Mr.
and Mrs. Tracy Evans. Mrs.
Louise Anderson and Del
Nicholes of Dallas visited
Saturday in the Evans home and
Sam McKnight of Lubbock was
dinner guest on Sunday.
Mrs. Franklin Moore,
Michael and Arm of San Antonio
visited last weekend with her
mother, Mrs. Hazel Hoffman.
Dinner guests Sunday were
those mentioned and Mr. and
Mrs. C.E. Moore of Snyder,
Mr. and Mrs. Dober Chewning
and Richard of Plainview, Mr.
and Mrs. Billy Hoffman and
Mrs. John H. Davis Jr., who
has honored recently on the
occasion of her 80th birthday,
has served not only as a Baptist
church Sunday school teacher
for 65 years and as a church
organist for 20 years, but has
filled community and civic
dutie's as well.
She is an American Red Cross
charter chairman and holds
citations from both Presidents
Woodrow Wilson and Franklin
D. Roosevelt in recongition
of the 22 years she was the
Cottle and King counties chair-
man for Red Cross. She was
welfare chairman for the two
counties for 20 years.
It was through the Red Cross
she administered the relief pro-
gram during the depression
years from her office in the
basement of the courthouse.
Mrs. Davis said help amounted
to three freight carloads of
food and clothing for the re-
sidents and she wrote checks
on the national Red Cross
account totaling $28,000 for re- offices, one of which
lief needs of the two-county organist.
The Paducahan is a charter
member of Gov. John Conally’s
Texas Committee on Aging and
was reappointed to Gov.
Preston’s Smith’s Counseling
on Aging.
She admitted she has had a
busy life but has enjoyed every
day of it. “I have enjoyed my
Sunday school teaching more
than any other work, as I
consider it the most reward-
ing,” she declared.
In teaching her principles
of character, her father had
instructed her to never fail to
lend a helping hand where need-
ed, no matter how low a
character that person might
have. She remembered his
words, “You do not lower your-
self to his level, when you try
to uplift your fellowman.”
Mrs. Davis said, “I love
people; I can lose myself in
their problems. I never con-

Tommy J. Boley, who Is doing
post graduate work at the
University of Texas, is among
the 300 persons initiated into
membership of UT chapter of
Phi Kappa Phi, national
scholastic honorary society.
The son of Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Boley, he is working on
his doctor of philosophy degree
in English education which he
expects to complete by end of
summer. Boley supervises
student teachers in English
for secondary schools and also
teaches an English method
course.
Prior to his return to Austin,
he taught three years in El
Paso University and in Permian
High School before that.
Graduated from Paducah High
School, he earned his bachelor
of arts degree from North
Texas University and his
masters from Texas U.

God And Fellowman
For four years, Mrs. Davis
was a six-county chairman of
the Texas Highway Depart-
ment’s Beautification Division
and also a member of the Cottle
County Committee of five, four
men and herself, who went to
the state capital to attempt to
get, and did get, the Lee High-
way, now known as US Highway
83, to come through Paducah.
Returning home, she partici-
pated in rallies and gave talks
to seek voter approval for the
project. (She asserted she had
always been a Democrat.)
Paducah became the only city
where two transcontinential
highways cross.
A charter member of the
1923 Study Club, Mrs. Davis
served as president and in
various other capacities. She
has been a member of the
Order of the Eastern Star for
more than 50 years during
which time she was worthy
matron two different times and
filled several Grand Chapter
