QUICK AND EASY — To cut
whole mushrooms quickly and with-
out waste, use a wire egg slicer —
the kind for hard-boiled eggs This
gives each mushroom slice a clean
edge which is not too thick. Chris P.,

ENERGY TIPS
* Heat rises. By opening attic or
upstairs windows, you allow it to
•■scape. Open them at the top so the
heat that has risen is let out first.
Also, opening windows on different
sides of the house creates cross-
currents that can make things more
comfortable.
’ Make sure the attic is ventilated.
The sun can easily heat an unventi-
lated attic of a dark-roofed house to
130 degrees Thai will heat the
whole house, even if it’s insulated.
* Open your windows at night to
let in the cool air. Close them in the
early morning and trap the cool air.
Block out the sun by drawing drapes
or pulling down window shades.
’ Awning shade windows from the
sun and admit light and breeze.
They're worth considering because
the amount of heat admitted through
windows can be reduced by as much
a»s 80 percent, which can lower the
temperature by" up to 15 degrees. It
is. important to note that when
installing awnings, try to place them
at a height that won't block the sun’s
low-angled rays in the winter.
A lightning bolt can generate more
heat than the surface of the sun.
READY-TO-USE GARLIC — I
love to use garlic in cooking, but
hate to fuss with it every time J need
a clove or two.
Solution: Peel a whole bulb or
two, store in a small jar and cover
the garlic with oil. I prefer olive oil,
but any salad oil will do. Store it in
the refrigerator, and then, when

CLOGGED SINK TIP — This,
process is fqc keeping a sink dean
and free-flowing •— not to unstop it
once it is completely clogged.
Pour one cup of baking soda into
the drain, followed by one cup of
vinegar every week.
As for the soda and vinegar foam,
flush the drain with very hot water.
In between times, if you have a
disposal, be sure to run plenty of
water down the drain when it is in
use so as to lessen the chances of
stopping up the drain Lily R.,
