that either hasn't raised teenagers, has their head in the sand or
maybe they're just stupid. Great parents have raised good kids
who do stupid things. I did, you did and today's teenagers will.
Teens yield to temptation. Maybe because they think adventure
will not pass their way again. Who knows what motivates them?
Teenagers are human; parents are human. Deal with it. But don't
blame some parent if a kid gets drunk or pregnant. Most of us try
to raise them right, and they will someday grow to be productive
people like we are, but first they have to experience life in those
teenage years when they believe they're smarter than ail of us.
One day, sooner than they think, they'll be us. And the cycle goes
on.**'*»*‘A speedy recovery to Judge Clmron Campbell
who had an emergency quadruple bypass last Friday. He's in good
spirits and doing good •••••The Rev. Bob Simmons turned
over No. 74. Happy Birthday and a bunch more.•••••The
2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, is now history. Names like
Marion Jones, the first woman to win five medals, three gold and
two bronze, and Michael Johnson, the fastest 200-meter runner in
history, and Maurice Green, the world's fastest man. The biggest
surprise was American wrestler farmboy Rulon Gardner who beat
undefeated Alexander Karelin who hadn't lost in 13
years •••••The closing ceremonies were as good as it
comes .•‘•‘•‘•‘•‘Keith the Hurricane in the gulf probably won't
reach us, but we could use some of its rain. A cool front arrives
Thursday .•‘•‘•‘•‘•‘The skeeters are back with a vengeance.
Smoke out of the marsh fires blankets the area. We should seed the
fire with mosquito dope and when the smoke blows in it would kill
the skeeters.•‘•‘•‘•‘•‘The big news this week is the Presidential
Debate Tuesday night. I don't look for a home run. Gore will have
more substance; Bush will sound as liberal as Gore. He's not wor-
ried about the conservative vote. The right has no other place to
go •••••Thursday night Liebermann will win over Cheney
A FEW HAPPENINGS
I'm not sure how you spell that rich man's disease, but I'm not
subject to getting it. It's caused by eating like a rich person. Cox
brought me some garden fresh egg plants a Cajun lady fixed in a
big rice dressing, and 1 loaded down. A farmer brought me a sack
of okra and 1 ate too much. 1 feel like I'm a pet coon. Capt. Chuck
brought axis deer meat, made a thick, rich brown gravy. I ate a slop
jar full. Now folks, the rich can't eat no better than
that.••‘•••‘Speaking of rich folks, Dot Eshbach and
Margaret Saint live like the rich. They just returned from South
Africa where they lived in five-star hotels. They're full of great sto-
ries .•••••Pam at Rocking J is having a big homecoming
breakfast special next Saturday morning for all the folks coming in
for the BC Homecoming. A great place to gather and see folks.

can eat a pan full of bread pudding. We spotted Mary Annand
George Cruse there last week eating a big burger.•••••Also
next Saturday is the big Bass Tourney sponsored by Bridge City
Bait. Call 886-1115 for information .•••••Someone asked
what became of Jacob Davis. Last we heard he married and has a
child and quit pole vaulting forever. A year ago most folks thought
he would try for the Olympics.•••••Susan Naquin retires as
director of the Hughen Center and Bob Hope High School.
Former resident Jeff Copper will take over. W.T. Oliver always
comes to mind when I think of that school for the physically
impaired. He made that facility what it is through hard
work .•••••Jay Canizaro, our Orange County connection to
the Minnesota Twins, was struck in the head last week during bat-
ting practice, but after a short hospital stay is doing
fine.•••••Just 2 Unique, a charming shoppe, operated by

Monday Granny Dora Rascoe celebrated her 101st birthday.
What a great lady. She's not kicking too high, but she's sharp as a
tack. She's really the matriarch of the BC area.
The Country Music Awards show is Wednesday night. They do
the best job of all the awards shows.
Our football coverage is outstanding. Look us over.
Also if you're in the market for a car or truck, look at our great
auto section. The dealers really have good buys right now. Tell
'em we sent you. That will even help a little more.
Dunn walks in as 1 finish. Not much help. Says he'll have a
Life's Highway column next week. Don't bet on it.
I gotta go. Thanks. Take care. God bless.
"Mais, I know dat, me, and if you not gonna book me in to get

Beaumont paper is the lousy job they're doing on high school foot-
ball. They used to do a great job, but this season they give Friday
nights very little coverage, sometimes only one graph. Oh well, all ’ going back, no, Clovis. It will change you life fo'ever."

everyone I spoke with. They missed a great opportunity. Too
much self-serving, not enough historical value.•••••A great
story has come Gene Hughes' way. He's editor of the Orange
County News. Gene was adopted in infancy by a great family. He
just found his natural mother, and this coming weekend he will fly
to meet her. The in-between story, how they got to this point, has
lots of interesting elements. Vicki wants to write the story, Gene,
if it's OK when you get back .•••••The Adopt-a-Pet

Gary Stelly's Airplay column didn't run last week. He didn't get
around to it. That young man has a full boat with everything he
covers at KOGT. plus subbing as news man and sports voice, he
still has the business to run. It amazes me how much he gets
done •••••Our sports guys scattered all over the area over
the weekend. Look us over. Great photos. Good stories. In fact,
this issue is loaded with copy you won't find anywhere
else.•••••The BC students have been doing great on

on Kelly Oct. 6. Congrats to Brian Jones, Ryan Thibodeaux and

a brand new Bobcat logo at the 50-yard line-and a run-through
tunnel complete with smoke for a dramatic grand entrance. Bobcat
defender Adam Potts said the flyover of three fighter planes after
the singing of the National Anthem provided extra inspiration for
the already-pumped players. The high-octane Cats ran right over

OUR CONDOLENCES
To the family of Otho Haunschild, 84, who died Sept. 29. The
funeral held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran. For the past 60
years he had given so much of himself to make Orange County a
better place. A leader who has left his mark. Our sympathies to
wife. Helen, son. Harold, daughter, Ann, and their families.
AGE IS A HIGH PRICE TO PAY
FOR MATURITY
I'm slow getting on the road this morning. It's 5 a.m. and
Frances hasn't gotten her Enterprise out yet. All papers were late,
she tells me.
The usual crowd of early risers are out, including our friend,
Bubba Hubbard.
It's 61 degrees. What a great week weather-wise. Last week at
this time it was 80 degrees.
Tee-Bruce signs on. Cajun music comes through the radio.
At 8 a.m. I tune in Bro. Dewitt Rainwater, the Singing
Evangelist, on KOGT. He's praying for Dunn and Grover. God
knows they can use it. He sings a couple of songs, "The Rose of
Sharon," for our buddy, Sharon," at the Golden Corral. Also "Old
Faithful One."
Patti shows up early.
Neighbor Cox has already been by. We talked about stick hors-
es and the other kids' toys we handmade so many years ago. One
more day and his bride will have put up with him 52 years. I tell
him I've never heard of a husband being shot while doing the dish-
es. He could make one more day that way.
It's dry. We could use rain.
The birds have all been fed. I've had French bread and figs and pie from Orange and elsewhere came by. Regina said many visi-
I'm ready to go. So come along-it won't do you no harm.
