Some of the school children were janitors. They cut and brought in wood
and made fires, and kept the building clean by sweeping it each day. Too, at
that time, the teacher had full control of his pupils as long as they were at the
school, with no complaint from the parents . . . if the child reported that he
had been scolded at school, he got the same at home.
Too, books taught morals ... remember the McGuffy Readers, and the
Blueback Spellers?
1883
About 1883, a two story brick school building was erected in block C on
land given by George F. Flynt. This building housed Mineola's only school
until 1901 (according to E.A. Reeves).
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lott remember going to this school building, also
her mother, Mrs. W.D. Williams, attended this school. The building was
made of brick, handmade in Mineola. Three such brick yards were here at one
time.
In 1901, the school board built a two story frame building where the brick
building had stood, and all grades went there for years or until a high school
was built in 1914. (Representative J.C. Buchanan is credited for giving us a
graded system, and for having, at times, a normal for the teachers in the sum-
mer time.)
After the high school was built, the high school children were separated
from the elementary children. This building experienced a fire in 1924 which
did considerable damage, and was rebuilt soon after. In 1969 or 70 classesR
