Sam. While we were enjoying our
bit of lunch the horses and cow also
had a bit of fodder.
With a smile on mv face and
Aunt Nora's urgency we took off"
with one wagon and the tour horses
hookup. This was to make sure the
horses could pull through the deep
snow on the fence rows when we had
to follow a fence. The snow was now *
four or five inches deep. Unde Same
was beginning to have trouble find-
ing his wav or remembering the wav
I didn t know which. The sndw just
wouldn t let up. It was getting to be
a problem out walking to get warm.
Aunt Nora began to worn and
let Grandpas know her concern.
Grandpas would say, Nora have
faith, Sam will take us through. Well
it began to get dark. Now all of vou
know how dark it gets in that time
of vear. Yes, id did get dark but the
white snow on the ground and a full
moon in the heavens lit the way. Yes
vou just have to have faith. Final!*
Uncle Same rode back and an-
nounced we onlv licked about two
miles to the back fence on the
Livingston propertv. After about
another mile we saw two lights in
the middle of a space between the •
Mesquite trees. Yes it was the men
coming to find us.
Well we got there, unloaded the
wagon, set up the oil cook stove and
the women went to work cooking a
Christmas eve meal. That night we
had sacked hog sausage and biscuits.
Sorghum for desert.
It was a lovely Christmas.
The men went back after Christ-
mas and got the other wagon. We
finallv got the Alldredge bunch
settled and my cousins started to
school at Fluvanna.
More on the Alldredge Clan in
the future. 1 wish everyone could
have enjoyed life as life as much as I
have. *

Scum Count* The Imngston bov*
(mv uncle*) talked mv grandfather
George \4 ashington Alldredge mto
moving from that area to and area
between Dermott an. Fluvanna in
Scum County and taking over a
larger fam wnh mavbe more paten
tial. Thu move was to take place
over the week before Christmas
while there was no school My
mother and 1 were already out there.
Preparations were begun The
chicken* and guineas were cooped
up for monng Mv dad showed up
tow davs before Christmas Eve in
our 192 b Chevrolet Coach with a
trailer hitch on the back between the
bumpers. Mv unde* on mv moth-
ers side of the famih were there to
help load the wagons with the house-
hold furnishings. There were two
wagons to be loaded. One of mv
unde* had a few wheel cotton trail-
ers that thev were going to haul the
hogs and some cattle in.'
This safari was to go across the
ranches from this area to that area
about twenty of twenty five mile*
across. The morning before we were
to start a good ole Texas notberner
blew in and the temperature got
down in the low twenties Bov was
it cold. Well the men made the de-
cision to make two loads of livestock
in the trailer around by Snyder and
then on to Dermont and not to try
it by automobile across the randies.
Now my unde Sam .Alldredge says I
have worked a cowboy on those
ranches and 1 know the way -cross
them. That is the onlv way for the
wagons to go.
On the day before Christmas eve,
grandpa before sun up had two
teams hooked to the wagons. He
had Prince and Nell to one wagon
and Dot and Maud to the other
wagon. Prince and Nell had Belgian
blood and were larger horses. Dot
and Maud were smaller and prob-
ablv had Morgan Hood. They could
pull heavv loads. I have seen these
four horses pull double row plows.
Sometimes grandpa would hitch
humpv a saddle with them to make
a five horse hitch when he was break-
ing land.
The next question, who was to go
on the wagons. Unde Sam was to
ride Humpy the saddle horse.
Grandpas on one wagon. My Aunt
Nora was to drive or better said take
over the second wagon. Now as you
know .every wagon team in those
days had a second rider that was
called the shotgun. My Cousin Loyd
that lived with grandpa was selected
for his wagon or ride with his
mother on her wagon. Now all hell
broke loose because 1 wasn't figured
in the selection. Just like a spoiled
child and enough tears dad said OK
take Billy with you. 1 started out
holding the reins for grandpa.
1 will try to give you the picture
as I remember it. It was another
episode of mv life that furthered my
education and gave me more respon-
sibility of manhood. Uncle Same
was to lead the way on Humpy.
Prince and Nell were lead wagon

1 will take this opportunity to tell
vou about their Christmas party.
There was nt much school on that
day. It was a time to bring the at-
tention of the children about our sav-
ior and the birth of Jesus. Stories
were read and reminisces given bv
older students about past Christ-
mases. Just before lunch time a lo-
cal Baptist elder would show up to
address the group w-hile some of the
ladies prepared a Christmas feast for
the kids. 1 really did enjoy that.
.^fter lunch and a play period for
everyone we were assembled again
for fruits and candy. School was
then dismissed for the holidays.
This was a Christmas I will always
remember. It really told us what it
was all about
This school and community was
located about 10 or 12 miles east of
Gail, the county seat of Borden.
There was a great expanse of Texas
in that area. It was mostly ranches
and a little farming (cotton). About
this time my Uncle Henry that lived
in Alexander in Erath County traded

No as vou mav have guesaed the
temperature warmed up mat enough
for n to start snowing 11 was still
real cold. I would have to get off
the wagon even once m a whle and
walk to keep warm. In tact we all
took time walking to get our feet
warm The snow got deeper and was
beginning tc cover the run on the
ranches. Unde Sam would ride a
mile or two ahead and hope the
snow wouldn t cover the horses
tracks before we got there.
About noon that dav we made it
to a line camp on a ranch, but no
one was there. Unde Sam had made
a fire in a little stove and when we
got there we warmed up and had
lunch from a basket Aunt Nora had
brought along The snow was get-
ting heavv: about four inches on the
ground at this tune. Grandpas and
Unde Same made a decision to try
to go on through with one wagon
and a four horse hookup. Aunt
Nora make the decision on which
wagon was needed the most. Now

Our Yesteryears
---------------------------------- The 20s
Well it b now well close to Christ-
mas anJ 1 must tell vou about mv
experience* m either 193? or 1931.
At tn» age 1 remember the experi-
ence but tailed tc record the date
M\ grandtalher on mother*
side wat a tenant farmer m Borden
Count* about 20 miles west of
Snvder in a small community that 1
have also iorgouen the name There
wa» « small school located there that
taught to the eighth grade. In the
twenties when mv mother and 1 vis-
ited me grandparent* during school
time 1 walked to the school with one
of tri aunts and two cousins that
lived wnh mv grandparents 1 had
! in mv mind that we walked four
; mile* to that school. I attended a
, binhdav celebration of this aunt m
1995 and she told me it was onlv 2
1 2 mile*. I know we started before
sunup tn the winter and got back
home just before dark. 1 hope the
children of this dav and age realize
the desire the parents and children
had then to obtain more knowledge
and understanding of the wavs of the
world.
The little school had one large
room with a large wood stove in one
corner. The headmaster, or 'top
dog* as some of the older boys called
him built the fire in the early morn-
| ing so the room would be warm
when the students would arrived. 1
remember the first two rows of desks ■
on one side w as for first and second
grade The next was for third and
I fourth grade. Then it was spaced
according}* to how many were in
each grade. The older students were
located the farthest from the stove.
1 also remember that the older
bovs and girls had a different recess
than the vounger ones. Thev would
have 30 minutes, or until thev lady
teacher would ring the beU to an-
nounce she was through instructing
. the vounger one*. Then the older
ones would return to class for a like
period and the vounger ones got to
plav. I got to attend both sessions.
Just a little more of mv private edu-
1 cation.
