The next regular business meeting
will be held May 12 in Nancy
Presley’s home.
Other events of the district con-
vention include district officer elec-
tions and the district queen’s
pageant. Kim Siepmann of Portland
will represent the Portland Lions
Club in that pageant.
Beta Sigma Phi members, gathered
Tuesday, April 29, for their annual
Founder’s Day dinner in the banquet
room of the Sandy Shores Inn, Cor-
pus Christi Beach. Dinah Bowman
was selected as “Girl of the Year”
and Gayle Baker as “Pledge of the
Year” for Omega Epsilon. Other
events included several chapters
giving highlights of their year’s ac-
tivities, along with the introduction
and installation of 1986-87 Beta |
Sigma Phi City Council officers.
The Portland Republican Womens
Club met Thursday, April 24, in the
home of Ann Allen, president, with
11 members and one guest atten-
ding. ,
Those present held a discussion
concerning the club’s March “Meet
the Candidates” forum, with a
spokesman noting that it was a “big
success,” adding that the turnout
was “larger than last year.”
A decision was made to hold a
jewelry party as one of the club’s
money-making projects. Pat Helms
Center, spoke to the group concern-
ing the center’s various programs
and services.
Installation of officers for the 1986-
87 year was held, with Celia Mabry
installed as president; Debbie Mar-
tindale, vice president; Barbara
Russell, recording secretary;
Darlene Borger, corresponding
secretary; Melissa Petkus,
treasurer; and Judy Bird, extension
officer.
It was reported that the chapter’s
“yardstick” recently was tabulated
at an executive board meeting, and
that Xi Xi Zeta once again was rated
a “three-star” chapter.

dent, presiding.

will host the party, with JoAnn
Ernest of “Jewels By Parklane”
showing the jewelry, along with
donating her commission to the club.
It also was decided that an elec-
tion fiesta dinner will be held in Oc-
tober in order to raise funds to
enable the club to operate the
Republican Headquarters
Portland during the election.

On Tuesday
The Gregory-Portland Chapter of
the American Association of Retired
Persons will meet at 10 a.m. Tues-
day at First Presbyterian Church,
Crosby St., for its regular mon-

present a film, entitled “Serving on
Boards and Commissions.”
Albritten also will serve as guest
speaker, along with James Nielsen
of Taft and Norris Rider of Beeville,
all candidates for the upcoming
Silver Haired Legislature election.
They will speak to the group concer-
ning their views and ideas and why
they are seeking election to that
position. Persons age 60 or over can
cast their vote in the Silver Haired
Legislature election on Friday, May
30, at the Community Center.

Campbell- Walker
Dr. and Mrs. Luther Campbell announce the engagement and ap-
proaching marriage of their daughter, Kathleen Gary, to Mark Callis
Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arland R. Walker of Austin. The bride-to-
be was graduated from Texas Tech University, summa cum laude,
and the University of Texas School of Law. She is an attorney with the
firm of Hagans, Ginnings, et al, at El Paso. The prospective groom
was graduated from the University of Texas, Phi Beta Kappa, and the
University of Texas School of Law. He is an attorney with the firm of
Grambling and Mounce, also in El Paso. The couple will be married in
June.

speak on recent developments at
Lloris Club International in a 9 a.m.

A business consultant and his com-
munity’s chamber of commerce
director and president, Drabek has
been active in the Lions Club since
1966. In the Lions Club, he has held
the offices of club president and
district governor, has been a reci-
pient of various extension awards,
the 100 Percent District Governor’s
Award and two International Presi-
dent’s Certificates of Appreciation,
in addition to being recognized as a
Key Member.

Omega Epsilon chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi met Monday, April 28, in
the home of Susan Barnard, with
Dinah Bowman, president,
presiding.
A Ritual of Jewels was held for
new members Marilyn Simmons,
Gayle Baker and Shirley Pannell.
Discussion was held concerning
the group’s ways and means project
— the catering of a fishing tourna-
j ment in June, and the chapter’s ser-
vice project — two scholarships for
Gregory-Portland High School
seniors.

Final Chapter Social
Alpha Upsilon Pi chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi met Monday, April 28, in
the home of Kathy Ward, with Elva
Breshears serving as co-hostess.
During the business portion of the
meeting, final preparations for the
chapter’s garage sale at Nina Bill-
ington’s home were made and the
1986-87 committee list was received
from President Ann Venditto.
Billington presented the evening’s
program entitled, “Outdoor Living:
Garden and Lawn Decorations.”
Terri Carter was the recipient of a
planter, while the friendship basket
holding lotion, soap and a candle,
was presented to Debbie Suggs.
Bridger Named
Mom Of Year
Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority held its
annual mother/daughter tea on Sun-
day, April 27, in the Zeta chapter
room on the campus of North Texas
State University at Denton.
Chapter members from Portland
who attended, along with their
mothers, were Kim and Pat
Bridger; Kim and Lucille Miller;
and Jana and Carol Quick. Also at-
tending from Portland was Mrs.
Sharon Hoskinson, aunt of Kim
Bridger.
A slide presentation of various
club activities was included in the
entertainment portion of the tea.
During the awards ceremony, Pat
Bridger was named “Mother of the
Year.”
Refreshments of taco salad,
vegetables, dips and cake were serv-
ed to Linda Medellin, Lucy Floyd,
Kaye Williams, Cydney Fowler,
Donna Jackson, Sue Hayes and
Debra Ready.

Area Students
Piano students of Becky Cunn-
ingham recently presented their spr-
ing piano recital in the First Baptist
Church fellowship hall.
Those participating were Mario
Guerra, Rhonda Evans, Lisa Nikel,
Kelly Nikel, Crystal Rodriquez,
Chad Griffith, Missy Rodriquez,
Gina Guerra, Elke Johnson, Melissa
Beck and Jennifer Hinojosa.
Following the recital,
refreshments were served and folk
guitar entertainment was provided
by Gina Guerra and Elke Johnson.
Alpha Delta Mu Honors
Fowler, Jackson At Banquet
Members of Alpha Delta Mu join-
ed other area Beta Sigma Phi
chapters for the annual Founder’s
Day celebration on Tuesday, April
29, at Sandy Shores Inn, Corpus
Christi Beach.
Cydney Fowler was named Alpha
Delta Mu’s “Girl of the Year,” while
Donna Jackson was honored as the
chapter’s “Pledge of the Year.”
Along with the installation of new
city council representatives, each
chapter presented highlights of their
1985-86 year.
During a meeting held Monday,
May 5, in Sue Hayes’ home, a Ritual
of Jewels ceremony was held for
Debra Ready. She was presented the
Beta Sigma Phi pin, roses and gifts.
Following the rituals, a regular
business meeting was held, with
discussion centering on plans for the
chapter’s upcoming year. Each
member signed up for meetings and
programs for the new year.
