County Gets
Bingo Check |
San Patricio County this week I
received a payment of $5,250.74 as
its share of the gross receipts tax on
charity bingo, State Comptroller
Bob Bullock announced.
That payment was up from a pay- |
ment of $1,515.40 received for the |
first five months of 1985. The |
county’s year-to-date payments also I
are well above 1985, with $7,901.90 I
being received for 1986 to date, as ]
compared to $1,820.54 received ■
through May of 1985, or a 334-percent
increase.
BETTY OATES of the local TompkinsYoung Real Estate office recently
received The Senior Sales Counsellor award, one of the highest awards con-
ferred by The Gallery of Homes. This is Betty's second year to receive this
coveted award which confers membership into the Knights of the Round
Table for excellence in residential home sales. Only 9 of these awards were
conferred in Texas. Betty, who has been with TompkinsYoung since 1978,
has been a multi-million dollar producer for five years.

When a hurricane watch is issued,
make plans early to ensiire your
safety should a storm come ashore.
Listen constantly to radio or TV,
monitoring the storm reports and
logging its position. Remember,
evaucation routes can close up to 20
hours before landfall because of
wind gusting or storm surge
flooding.
WHEREAS, the Portland Lioness Club will be distributing donor
cards in and around the City of Portland during the week of June 9 -15,
1986, in search of donors to the Lion Eye Bank of South Texas; and
WHEREAS, the Lioness Club, in joint participation with the Lions
Club, have become particularly identified with their efforts in behalf of
the blind, and their community service activities emphasize sight con-
servation, services to the blind, youth activities and a wide range of
special projects for the benefit of the entire community in which the club
is located; and
Well, summer vacation is here at last. This is the time that most of us
will stay out until midnight, stay up until two o’clock, and then not get up
the next day until noon. I will say that I definitely fall into this category,
and I usually stick to this schedule unless something comes up, which it
did.
It was a marching camp arranged by Mr. Van for the freshman band
members and directed by himself, Becky Carter (who is one of last year’s
drum majors), Roxann Pais and Angela Alexander (who are this
season’s drum majors). This camp lasts one week, from 7,:30 to 10:30
a.m., and then again July 23-25 at the same time.
To me that is awfully early to get up to march, but there were many
there ready to go. I was there that early, along with the other newly-
elected officers to introduce ourselves to the newcofrrtif-s and get to know
them. The 1986-87 band officers, by the way, are Marty Wind, president;
Donny Collins, vice president; Laura Wilder, secretary; Connie Dier-
inger, treasurer; Teresa Hardin, publicity; Jill Wood, historian; Omar
Guerra, senior representative; Trey Burgess, junior representative; and
Jennifer Johnson, sophomore representative. The freshman represen- .
tative is usually elected by the freshman band members at the beginning
of summer band in August.
The freshmen and officers were not the only ones at work. Our per-
cussion section started rehearsals last Thursday morning at 9 o’clock,
and the flags worked later that night at 6 o’clock. The rifle corps, in which
I am also involved, started Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock to prepare for
the camp that we will attend later in the month.
The willingness of everyone to be at the school, either early or late, to
work shows the dedication and love that we have for this organization,
and it is, I believe, a sign of great things to come for the year I
