Sorority Chapter Observes Halloween
Alpha Upsilon Pi chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi met in the home of
Dorothy Ralph on Monday, Oct. 27.

The Portland Lions Club and the
Portland Lioness Club will observe
“Diabetes Awarness Month” in
November with two programs aim-
ed at informing the community
about diabetes.
On Saturday, the Lions Club will
sponsor a diabetes testing program
at K-Mart. Two Gregory-Portland
school district nurses, Hilda Cunn-
ingham and Mary Gonzalez, will
provide screening testing between 10
a.m. and 3 p.m.
On Monday, the Lioness Club will
host a program about diabetes
awareness at 7 p.m. at the Portland
Chamber of Commerce Building, 902
Elm St.
A guest speaker will provide infor-
mation about diabetes and will
answer questions; the meeting is
open to the public, a spokeswoman
said.

James and Susan Hendryx an-
nounce the birth of their daughter,
Amanda Janet, born at 6:30 a.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1986, at Humana
Hospital, Corpus Christi.
She weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce and
measured 20% inches.
She joins two brothers, Kevin and
Shane.
Maternal grandparents are Stan
and Shirley Beardsley of Portland.
Paternal grandparents are Gene
and Letty Hendryx of Edroy.
Boy Scout Troop 20 will hold its
third annual Homecoming Spaghetti
Supper on Friday, Nov. 14, at the
Portland Community Center.
Dine-in or takeout orders will in-
clude spaghetti, french bread and
either iced tea or coffee for $2.50.
Dinners will be served from 4:45 un-
til 7:45 p.m.

Omega Epsilon met again on Oct.
27 at Susan Barnard’s home to
prepare gift Halloween parcels of
homemade “goodies” for the
residents at the Aransas Pass Nurs-
ing and Convalesent Center.
« Witches, black cats and jack-o-
lantems were also made for their
rooms.
The club gave special recognition
to Susan Barnard, Gayle Baker, Jen-
nifer Cox, Pat Mitchell, Shirley Pan-
nell and Marily Simmons for the
preparations they made.
A Christmas shopping spree will
be held for all the members and
guests at an area mall on Saturday.

Jennifer Shae Maples, the
daughter of Jon and Linda Maples
of Portland, won second place at a
Halloween costume contest at K-
Mart Department Store on Friday,
Oct.31.
Omega Epsilon held its annual
Halloween party on Oct. 25 at the
home of Robert and Susan Barnard.
The traditional Halloween theme
of jack-o-lanterns, spooks and
skeletons was carried throughout
the house. The accompanying buffet
included each member’s favorite
homemade hors d’oeuvres with the
centerpiece being a potted plant
jack-o-lantern.
The costumes were many and
varied.
Those attending were Dinah
Bowman, Bobby and Jennifer Cox,
Bob and Pat Mitchell, Richard and
Shirley Pannell, Marilyn Simmons
and Michael and Lesa Timmons.
Special guests were Dave and
Ortiz
Pat and Belinda Ortiz of Gregory
announce’the birth of a son, Paul An-
thony, at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct.
29,1986, at Memorial Hospital.
He weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces and
measured 21 inches.
He joins a sister, Pamela, and a
brother, Pat Jr.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Fermin Hernandez Jr. of Gregory
and Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe Ortiz of
Gregory.
Great-grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Fermin Hernandez Sr., Mr.
Alfonso Solis and the late Rosalia
Solis and Mrs. Inez Acosta, all of
Gregory.
