On the very first of day of grad-
uate school, some 25 years ago, I
learned one of the most impor-
tant tenets of social work: Start
where the client is. ft seems simple
enough and applies to both a single
client and community alike. But,
how do you get to “where the cli-
ent is?” This leads to the more ad-
vanced principal of conducting an
interview or survey also known as
a needs assessment.
For many years, the Dallas Jew-
ish community leaders have been

A Bonhams specialist will
be visiting Dallas to provide
complimentary auction estimates
with a view to selling at upcoming
auctions in New York and London.
Our intentions have been good,
but in truth our method has been
hit or miss and not based on sound
data collection techniques.
This has changed over the
course of the last several weeks.
On May 28, the Dallas Jewish
Community Scan went live after
months of preparation. Since you
read the TJP, it is likely that you
are an involved community mem-
ber and have received multiple
requests to take the scan from the
various organizations with which
you interface.
Have you done it yet?
This is your chance to have your
voice heard and to help the more
than 50 synagogues, organizations
(the TJP included) and agencies
refine their services to better meet
our community’s needs.
I took the scan today. Yes,
you would think 1 would have
done it already, but just about
everything else had gotten in the
way. I did not, however, want
to let this opportunity slip by.
The whole process took about
20 minutes. I responded to the
email I received from the Jewish
Federation of Greater Dallas
and clicked on the link within
it to start the process. However,
if you didn’t receive an email,
you can access the scan at www.
dallasjewishcommunityscan.org.
If going online isn’t your thing,
you can call the Federation at 214-
369-3313 and take the scan over
the phone. All responses, whether
online or over the phone, are
strictly confidential. This is one
key to the success of the project.
Another important piece, is
for you to spread the word to your
friends, even if you have already
taken the scan yourself. One need
not be a constituent of any par-
ticular organization to participate,
only identify themselves as a mem-
ber of the Jewish community.
Recently the UJA-Federation
of New York released the data
garnered from its “Jewish Com-
munity Study of New York: 2011.”
This data set, the largest from any
local or national Jewish commu-
nity study, is a rich resource for re-
searchers, policymakers, students
and academics.
I hope that with the help of each
of you, by taking the Dallas com-
munity survey before it closes on
June 26, we will gain insights that
will drive the best, most innovative
and most importantly, necessary
Jewish community services and
programs for many years to come.
