“Fill the Void” was the official
submission of Israel to the Best
Foreign Language Film category
for the 85th Academy Awards in
February of 2013.
Although born in New York
in 1967, the writer/director Rama
Burshtein graduated from the Sam
Spiegel Film and Television School
in Jerusalem in 1994. While in Is-
rael, she became deeply religious
and upon graduation, she dedi-
cated herself to promoting him as
a tool for self-expression in the Or-
thodox community. She has writ-
ten, directed and produced films
for the Orthodox community,
some of them for women only. In
this him, she reveals the complex-
ity of the Orthodox in a realistic
manner; never condescending nor
judgmental.
Not unlike the kings and queens
who populate the pages of our his-
tory books, Shira is compelled to
make a choice between her fam-
ily’s wishes and her own desires.
Unfortunately for us, I don’t think
the prospective groom she seeks
can be found on JDate.
Makom, a project of Congregation Shearith Israel building energized
Jewish life among young adults, is blessed by the dedicated volunteers that
define and lead our peer-led community.
Since Makom's founding last summer, Brad and Rivka Altman have
epitomized the values of our young organization, giving of their selves and
their time to build our laboratory for dynamic Jewish experiences. Brad and
Rivka hosted the house party that gave birth to our community in August
2012 and have been instrumental leaders ever since. Brad and Rivka are now
heading the coordination and recruitment for Makom's forthcoming trip to
Israel, in December 2013.

And voila! You would have
“Fill the Void,” writer and director
Rama Burshtein’s exceptional first
feature film.
The film opens with a dash
of humor as Shira Mandelman
(Hadas Yaron) and her mother
Rivka (Irit Sheleg) scour the lo-
cal grocery store, hoping to catch
a glimpse of the matchmaker’s
selection. When they can’t read-
ily find him (remember, this is an
Orthodox community and every-
one is dressed alike so there is no
“I’ll be wearing a red carnation in
my lapel”), they make a phone call
and Shira’s scouting party shifts to
the dairy aisle where they spot the
young man.
At 18, Shira is of marriageable
age and equally delighted and
apprehensive about viewing her
match for the first time. But her
giddiness is short lived when trag-
edy strikes the Mandelman house-
hold and Shira is impelled to carry
out an unusual and difficult pro-
posal for the sake of her family.
To reveal more would disclose
too much of the plot and spoil your
movie-going experience. So have a
little “faith” here and take my rec-
ommendation to see this film —
but only if you enjoy award-win-
ning films that tell a great story.
“Fill the Void” amassed numer-
ous awards from the Israeli Film
Academy including Best Actress,
Best Cinematography, Best Direc-
tor, Best Film, Best Makeup, Best
Screenplay and Best Supporting
Actress. At the Palm Springs In-
ternational Film Festival it won
the FIPRESCI Prize - Best Foreign
Language Film. And at the Sao
Paulo International Film Festival it
won the International Jury Award

“Fill the Void” is one of those
exceptional films that manages to
present all that I crave in a movie-
going experience. There are many
reasons why one goes to see a
movie: To be entertained. Check!
To laugh, emote. Check! To be
educated and enlightened. Check
and check! If “Fill the Void” was
a recipe, the ingredients would re-
semble this list:
• Take a first feature film
director
• Combine it with great
storytelling
• Add a terrific cast
• Blend in a bissel humor (just
a bissel!)
• Let it rise for 90 minutes
