In tasteful homes. The principle oT
selection aeems to have been. "Bather a
good rag rag than a cheap OrintaL"
To be Bore the good Oriental will
always remain the most desirable of
floor-coverings from point of both
srviceability and beauty but it is be-
ing used with greater discrimination
and more careful study of its deeora-
tiv value than ever before. Instead
of a promiscuous seleetton of Orientals
whose sices and colors are at variance
one sees rugs to perfect harmony with
spaces and color schemes. In the long
hall perhaps is a Bijar; in the hall
that is targe and square a Gorevans oS
Paste with its green and woody and
rich mahogany tones; while in the Mv-
Ing room one is likely to find an
antique Iran or one of the lovely Sere-
hmd6 or Majale.
The English plain rugs are much
wj .ni wUh hAantifnl effect The
Sasraoy Whlttall and Anglo-Persian are
especially desirable.
2nere is a noticeable tendency to-
ward plain solid colorings in floor-coverings
which is well met by the pleas-
ing designs of many of the Wilton rugs.
Xbe Wilton carpeting may be obtained
bs wide as three yards which may be
bought for ten doHass a yard and
makes a very beautiful rug because
roc many rooms no seam is required.
The popularity of Colonial architec-
ture and the present fondness for the
antique has brought about the revival
of the rag rug. Bag rugs or carpets
may be had ready made in certain stock
sizes or they may be made to order in
almost any slae from the buyer's own
rags or from rags furnished by the
rugmaker. Thus it is possible to obtain
many delightful color effects often so
hard to do to other styles of rugs.
" if By Margaret Morton;
These rugs can be made seamless in
any size up to sixteen feet to width
and any length.
The fiber or grass rugs have a dura
bility and an artistic quality far in
excess of what might be assumed fnom
their most moderate prices. One of the
cheaper grass rugs bears a design sten
ciled on its upper surface after the
weaving has been done so that the re
verse side is plain but equally useable.
These come as low as L38 for a piece
3 feet by 6 feet and $8.00 for one 9
feet by 12 feet
Designs that suggest the Navajo col-
orings and patterns are used for an
other variety of fiber rugs that have
the fiber braided to resemble hammock
cord. These are somewhat more ex-
pensive than other types a 9 by 12
sise coating about twenty dollars. The
regulation Navajo rugs by the way
are taking on considerably more sub-
tle hues and their qnleter colorings
have added not a little to their beauty
and practicability.
For $20 one can buy an Interesting
Madagascar straw-braided rug which is
the Oriental counterpart of the old-
fashioned rag rug. It is straw colored
with narrow wavy black lines near the
border and a plain design in the center.

SHE THOUGHT TO SOME PURPOSE.
Robert W. Chambers the popular
novelist was talking- to a reporter
about the "artistic temperament."
-1 have little patience with the
aj-tistlc temperament" Mr. Chambers
said. "Its synonym is selfishness. Mrs.
Wordsworth was right" Mr. Cham-
bers smfled. TThe poet Wordsworth"
he resumed "used to compose in bed at
night. Nudging his wife in the small
hours he would say: 'Maria get up.
I've thought of a good word.' And Mrs.
Wordsworth would rise sleepily light
a candle and write at her husband's
dictation for 10 or 15 mimjtes.
"A couple of hours later Wordsworth
would wake h- again. 'Get up. Maria.
I've got a good word' he would re-
peat. But one night Mrs. Wordsworth
put a stop forever to this nocturnal
dictation. Her husband awakening her
with the usual Get up Pve thought of
a good word.' was startled to hear her
reply. 'O get up yourself ! rve
thought of a bad word." St Ixuis
