Bud the Office Boy Likes Sport
and Finds the Office Bunch Different
Writes His Impressions and Revels in the Delights of a Pair of Boxing Gloves
Santa Claus Brought Him.
: By HORMAN M. WALKER.
THIS piece Is going to be about
Bud the office boy. Every
newspaper must have an office
Lioy. Bud it is in this latitude and
.o.iitude.
Office boys are supposed to ipeiid
their time between the comics which
come In by the bale on Wednesday
and the sport derk where the sporting
editor writes weighty editorials about
Jim Flydn's fist or Packey MoKax-
iand's heel. Not our Bud! True he
does peruse the funnies for the doings
of little Jimmy and his Pa. But who
does not? This is only Bud's means of
relaxation after reading Henry Jones's
Essay on Silence" and the Smithsonian
i c port on mammals. Bud is everything
to everyone around tne El Pa30 Herald
office. He shoots in and out of the
composing room 32 times daily carry-
ing copy from the copy desk to tha
E-echamcal ioreman. He also makes
frequent and fruitful trips to the 1-ost-cffice
for mail and papers licks stamps
answers telephones and receives visi-
tors. While he is resting he hunches
up to a typewriter and writes pieces
for the paper just for practice. Bud is
going to be a reporter wha he grows
out; he is now sis feet almost and
he has been told that to learn to walk
in the way ct the writer he nust first
crawl and he writes many "pieces for
the paper" that never see the light
of oay and some others that do.
la Up On Sport Dope.
Bud knows the standing of every
baseball team in all three leagues In
Hasan tha record of all prize fighters
except Jack Johnson who ne has barred
from his brain; attends all of the bowl-
ing basketball and wrestling matches
that are held in town and cat' box a
bit in his own right. Christmas the
bunch pooled their spending money
md bought Bud a set cf boxing gloves.
S'nce then be devotes his spare minutes
to the Marquis of Queensberry's game.
He often whips the Associated Press
nian as a diversion. xJetween trips to

i the postoffice composing room and to
the boss's house. Bud has written his
impressions of the office on his visible
Ktmington for the benefit of those not
as intimatsly acquainted with the in-
ner secrets of a newspaper news de-
rartment as he is in this particular
srrine. His essay listens:
Bud Write a Piece.
"Things are not as they seem. (High-
Lrow stuff always makes a good lead
the city editor says.) A newspaper
office is as different from what folks
think it is as a stage reporter is from
the regular brand. When I accepted
7) a position here I thought all news-
papers were like the kind in the story
books. According to these the man-
aging editor should be an old man
with gray hair and a florid face; the
sporting editor a big deep-chested
chap and the telegraph editor a saffron
hued gink who rolled cigarettes be-
tween ticks on the instrument. As
soon as I could train myself to quit
jumping 40 feet in the air each time
the boss yelled 'copy at me I discov-
ered that he was just like other per-
sons and even smoked a real pipe. As
for the sporting editor he has no more
lung capacity than I have; he smokes
cigars and a pipe and wears glasses.
The telegraph editor js a little fellow
of the can't-hplp-from-liking type who
never smokes anything stronger than
a pipe and is a little thin on his
thatch. The news editor cusses when
he breaks tbe point off his pencil.
T am going to make the society edi-
tor just as mad as I can by writing)
the truth about her. She owns neither
cat nor parrot does not wear earrings
attempts no sob stories and has a
smile that makes me glad to go out
to the 1600 block on Boulevard for
her copy. She is as nice a young girl
as any girl could possibly be. As for
the reporters there is not an amateur
detective in the bunch. They are all
a likable bunch and besides they helped
give me my boxing gloves for Christmas."
which took place in San Diego Calif. 5be

lived or many years on what is now

randa avenue.

tion with the building of the new road
between Las Cruees and Organ left yes-
terday for a brief visit in El Paso.

is again able to be around her home.
The Bridge club met at the home of
T. B. Merrill yesterday afternoon. Four

fulful cut srlass violet basket which was
won by Mrs. Vincent May. Refresh-
ments were served.

ously ill at her home on Main street is
