ABILENE, Texas—An endowment of
$800,000 will fund the Louie Welch Chair of
Business and Management at Abilene
Christian University (ACU). Announced
during a Wednesday luncheon at the
Houston Club on Nov. 9, the chair will be
fully funded by the end of 1984.
The announcement came as a surprise to
Welch, mayor emeritus of the city of
Houston, who had agreed earlier to teach a
three-week seminar in June 1984 on the
subject of business and governmental rela-
tions. The seminar will be the first activity
funded by the chair, said Dr. William J.
Teague, ACU president.
Welch served as mayor of Houston for 10
years, from 1984-74, making him the only
mayor tn the history of the city to serve
five consecutive terms, according to
Cheryl Mann, ACU news director. During
his tenure as mayor he served as president
of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and vice
president of the National League of Cities
Currently he serves as president and chief
executive officer of the Houston Chamber
of Commerce.
Funding for the chair was made possible
through a challenge grant of $400,000 by
the Brown Foundation of Houston and mat-
ching gifts totalling $400,000 by friends of
Welch, principally in the Houston area.
Teague said the chair will be one of. if
not the largest, endowed chair at any
Texas college or university, and that the
endowment will allow us to bring in
business leaders of international stature to
speak to our students ’’ He added that the
chair could be filled by a faculty member
at some future date
Reacting with shock at the announce- -
ment Welch said “I'm speaking to you ■
from 12.000 feet’ Something like this is a
lasting memorial to what I consider to be
the greatest bberal arts college in the «
world ” The generosity of the donors
"shows the high regard that they hold for
the university "
