is conducted as a popular educational institutional, all its privileges

and other periodicals; has the usual departments, lending, reference,
etc.; children's department has 6,000 volumes, carefully selected;
-- loans of books for home use since opening the library in 1904 over
700,000 now averaging about 250 a day. The library provides frequent
"free lectures upon practical literary and scientific subjects," often
I 7 illustrated by steropticon pictures, given in library lecture hall (seat-
O Zing 700) for adults in the evening and for school children in the day
L_ time. Colored branch located in an addition to the Central (c) High
I C school building, sw cor M, 26th, has 2,800 volumes and 30 current

o Library opened to the public June 22, 1904, birthday of the found-
N C er, in its fireproof new building, 134x87 ft, devoted exclusively to
library purposes. Situated on spacious grounds elevated several feet
61 above the street, this dignified and massive structure presents an
I... appearance of great stability and distinction, as well as beauty. Cost
N of library site, building, equipment, and present stock of books, about
$245,000 (building alone $155,000); permanent endowment fund about
$600,000; all from the bequest of Henry Rosenberg, merchant and
banker of Galveston, who died in 1893. Association incorporated
July 10, 1900. Board of 20 trustees meets annually; trustees elect
board of 7 directors, that meets monthly. Member of board of di-
