Since midnight about you."
“But Grace," Sue objected Impa-

IfXOW GO ON WITH THE STORY J
Long years at hard labor had added
their Impressions to lines formed by
base deeds and thoughts in earlier
years. One more such thought was
as a grain of sand upon a beach.
"Bump him off. Take him for a ride,”
he growled. “Why should we be
bothered with cake-eaters like him
nosing Into our affairs?”
M|nty raised Ids hand and
jocted sternly. “Not so fasti
keep your hands off Gerard It you
want to protect yourself. Get that
straight! Of course, he can’t hurt
us. Let him play around and think
he is Sherlock Holmes, Junior, if he
likes the Idea. When he gets tired of
the game, it will only prove to the
law and the public that we still know
our stuff. It really does us more
good than harm. Makes everyone
else more afraid to oppose us.”
"Whke we lose a lot of good busi-
ness.”
“Just delays our campaign <>Vi the

cously. “Let young Gerard have his
1 11 find a way to make
the boy pay for it, just you leave
that to me. Understand?”
The others nodded sullenly with
slight lifting of shoulders and
reptitlous glances among themselves
when Minty was not looking.
“If we’ro not going bankrupt, why
the cut In salaries?” Slim demanded.
"My expenses ain’t cut none, I can
tell you.”
"How would you like to have them
cut down to nothing, with a nice
barred window in your room?” Minty
suggested with a leer. “Anyone who
wants cheap living is welcome to it.”
No one replied.
Minty continued.
staying close to the club these days?”
All nodded silently.
"Well, a little vacation will do you
no harm. You can speed up busi-
ness all the better when things quiet
down. AH right, it’s time you fel-
lows wont home to bed.”
They did not hesitate to heed his
dismissal. With varying personal re-
marks, they hurried out of the room
and into a wide corridor, passed by
a door which was obviously the exit,
opened a concealed one in the op-
posite wall and filed out. In a dark
courtyard, several powerful motor
cars awaited them, which they en-
tered and glided away. Slim ami
Grub rode alone, continuing with
their own conference.
"Ain’t the boss gottin’ high-hat,
thoughT’ Hllrn asked. “Who doos he
think he Is, anyway?”
"Minty Doran, of course, king of
the underworld,” Grub reminded him.
“Well, there was Caesar and Napol-
eon and a few other famous kings
who got too high-hat for real com-
fort. Dear Brutus, you know, slipped
up on his best friend with a dagger."
“That was a long time ago. He
couldn’t get away with it, now. It's
easier to operate a machine gun than
to pull a dagger, and quicker.”
"What d’you care how Minty treats
us, so long ns you can pull down
enough to cat?” Slim was scornful.
"I can’t complain about that, nor
anything else that I know.”
"What about our salary cut?”
"I can still make a nice deposit on
three bank accounts.”
