Where there is development of manufacturing
there is usually, in close proximity, natural resources.
Texas’ Natural resources are this year, being more
widely publicized than perhaps during any calendar year
in the history of the state. For the thousands of Cen-
tennial visitors are seeing first hand, many of the
natural resources so interestingly portrayed at the cen-
tral exposition in Dallas.
Now, reports are current in the newspapers and
magazines, of results already showing up from a bar-
rage of publicity on Texas as to the future industrial
development. Again from the Texas Weekly, the in-
formation is gained that in Dallas no less than fourteen
new industries have been added to the list of Dallas
manufacturers in the past two months. From Clara H.
Lewis of the Bureau of Business Research, writing in
Texas Business Review, the information is obtained
that a total of forty-two new manufacturing plants were
established in Houston during the first seven months
of this year. And in the same article in Texas Week-
ly, is found the story of industrial development in other
Texas cities. Port Arthur for example, has a new oil
refinery that cost around three million dollars. Con-
. struction has started on a million-dollar polymerization
unit at Baytown, and contracts have been let for a new
oil cracking plant at Houston. In many other Texas
Cities, new industries have been established, or branch-
plants of industrial organizations set up as permanent
citizens of Texas.

Much has been said this year in particular, about
Industry in Texas, and of Texas Natural Resources.
From the Texas Weekly, several articles have been re-
produced on this page lately, describing the results of
publicizing Texas as the future Industrial development,
and outlining the Natural Resources of the state.
Some years ago, business interests of Dallas, formed
what was known as “Industrial Dallas.” A large fund
las advantages as an industrial center. Reports while
las advantoges as an industrial center. Reports while
that campaign was Under way, revealed the addition of
many industrial and commercial plants to Dallas.
Lately Lt. Governor Walter Woodul came forth with a
strong appeal for*establishing a large fund, to be used
in advertising Texas. The Lieutenant Governor’s in-
spiration admittedly came from the results of advertis-
ing the Texas Centennial.

much easier to start bulkttng jj
an estate on the Installment thrift
share plan of the Henderaon Fed-
eral Savings and Loan Association
than to make resolutions to save
a little every month. For resolu-
tions are easily broken.
“In thus creating an estate, the
person who buys installment thrift
shares in thia association is at
once aiding the city in which he
earns hia money, and makes his
home, for, the money paid on the
shares, is loaned on Henderaon
homes. When a home costing 83.-
this association, and the ultimate 000 or more, is built in Hendanon,
creation of an eatate in the
amount desired by the individual,
is seen In the plan of the Install-
ment Thrift Shares of the Asso-
ciation.
"Many people who work for a
salary, or wages," Mr. Preston
said, "find It difficult to accumu-
late money. With modem stand-
ards of living and current costa of
the necessities of everyday life at
their present level, the matter of
having enough left over to put
away and save, Is something that
concerns a big per cent of salaried
people. So, buying money, or an
estate, on the installment plan, is
one way that can be placed in the
family budget and followed care-
fully, results in the accumulation
of an estate that otherwise would
be difficult to attain.
“The average family la accus-
tomed to buying the things they
need and want, on the installment
plan. The refrigerator, radio, car,
washing machine, and numerous
other things owned by the aver-
age family, all are paid for on
monthly payment plans of one
kind or another.
"Buying an estate of from 8L-
000 to 310,000, may be managed
pretty much on the same plan.
The two dlfferencee are: The time
in which the total aum will be ac-
quired is governed by the amount
of the monthly payment, and in
lieu of paying interest on the in-
stallment each month, the person
buying an estate through the in-
stallment thrift shares of this as-
sociation, is paid a dividend on the
money being paid In.
Accumulation of 81,000, just a
little more than the price of the
low priced oars, can be arranged
on Installment Thrift Shares, and
the time will depend on the
amount paid in each month. For
example, a person who sst out to
attain a 81,000 cash estate, and
who paid 336 per month, would
reach that goal In less than one-
fifth the time of a person who

for it with a large stock of Sher-
win-Williams paints, wallpapers
and supplies. Sherwin-Williams
paint is on top for quality, and
the price is very reasonable,” Mr.
Spear pointed out.
In addition to a complete line of
Sherwin-Williams Paints, Var-
nishes, Enamels, Wall Paper, etc.,
Mr. Spear carries at the Hender-
son Paint & Paper Company,
paint brushes, canvass, paste and
many other things accessory to a
complete paint store.
Located on South Main street,
the Henderson Paint & Paper
Company is easily accessible. The
store Is just a block from the cir-
cle, and on the west side of South
Main street, near the Liberty the-
atre.
Among other services offered by
this store, is that of getting home
owners in touch with paint and
paper contractors at their re-
quests. A roster of the contrac-
tors is kept on hand, with tele-
phone numbers, etc., and usually
the information as to what job
a contractor or his men are work-
ing on, may be had by calling 434,
and asking Mr. Spear, or his as-
sistants.
A committee headed by Roy Miller of Corpus
Christi and made up of Texas Industrial leaders has
been named to make arrangements for a permanent ex-
hibit at the central Exposition grounds, of Texas’
Natural Resources. Commenting on the move, the
Texas Weekly said that “The setting up of a permanent
exhibit of the State’s Natural Resources will not be
simply a matter of satisfying State vanity—of saying,
in effect, to the world, “Look what we have here!” At
least not for the sake of saying that. This will be a
very practical thing and potentially productive of great
profit to Texas. There is no question that this State
possesses enormous wealth in the shape of undeveloped
natural resources; it is doubtful if any area of equal
size anywhere in the world is more fortunate than Texas
in this respect.”
Commenting on the proposed permanent exhibit,
the Dallas News offers a suggestion that; "Not only
should a central collection be maintained, but traveling
collections should be sent out from the central exhibit
to the various fairs and expositions of the country each
year. The central exhibit should not be a dead display
but one showing potential uses, and there should .be
experts in charge to give seekers for information scien- *
tific information concerning quality, quantity and lo-
cation of Texas resources.”
Natural resources and advantages of Henderson
and Rusk County, are such as to attract new industry
here, and the movement sponsored as a State wide
project, doubtless will be seized upon by leaders in a
program of expansion for the immediate future and
later. Obviously, cities like Dallas and Houston will
set up Individual displays as a separate thing, with
which they will hope to draw to their own borders, all
such industries as they may interest in their advan-
tages. Recent figures from reliable sources, point out
a current trend toward the smaller city, and such ad-
vantages as exist in Henderson and Rusk County,
would doubtless make a most interesting contribution to
publicizing Texas’ natural advantages for industry and
her natural resources.

Buying money on thrift install-
ment plan, is called an easy way
to build up an estate, by E. M.
Preston, Secretary-Treasurer of
the Henderson Federal Savings
and Loan Association. Amounts
ranging from 81,000 up, may be
designated on the plan offered by
the number of days work provided
for carpenters, painters, paper
hangers, mill employes and ethers,
runs into a rather Interesting fig-
ure. Wages paid to these work-
men, as well as the profits made
by firms selling the materials for
the home, are In turn spent with
the business firms of Henderson*
and so it is an endless cycle that
adds materially to the growth pro-
gress and prosperity of the tcwSe
and all while the investor Is cre-
ating his estate on the monthly in-
stallment plan.
“Aside from these advantages,
the investor In shares of this as-
sociation are protected two ways.
In addition to the record of the
association, shares are insured up
to 86.000, by the Federal Savings
and Loan Insurance Corporation
of Washington, D, C.” Mr. Preston
