ON LAKE WHITNEY
Visits at nearby Hillsboro
and three vacations at Lake
Whitney influenced Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Johnston of Kermit to chan-
ge from the oil business to the
resort business. They recently
purchased and assumed manage-
ment of Wilkins Harbor.
Mrs. Johnston is the former
Dorothy Paris of Hillsboro.
When visiting Hill County rela-
tives they followed development
of Lake Whitney. Then vaca-
tions at Wilkins Harbor sold
them on Lake Whitney in general
and the Little Rocky commercial
in particular.
“We’ve wanted to go into
business for ourselves and Wil-
kins Harbor looks like a wonder-
ful opportunity,” the new opera-
tors declared.
The Johnstons have five chil-
dren: Rusty 1.3, Ronnie 10, Judy
8, Melody 2 and Stevie 1. The
three oldest children attend
Clifton schools.
An uncle, S. L. Whitehead
from St. Louis, is helping the
Johnstons operate Wilkins Har-
bor.
Mrs. Grace Wilkins and son,
Jerry Wilkins, who operated the
commercial since the death of
Claude Wilkins in 1958, now are
making their home in Waco.

the warden writes
Dear Bill:
We sure have had some action at Lake Whitney. Dove hunting
was good. The season closed Oct. 20. Fishing really is good.
Blackbass, crappie, whitebass, channelcat and yellowcat all
have been running good. Big crappie finally are showing up. A
lot of black bass were caught during the 18-foot rise. Channel-
cat have furnished lots of sport.on trotlines and rod and reels.
Fishing has been good below the dam and should continue
good for some time after the gates are closed, with the lake
down to normal again, fishing should be good for at least four
or five weeks.
Goose season opens Oct. 26 and duck season comes later this
year, Nov. 13. I have noticed a good many ducks and saw about
200 Canadian Honkers before the season opened. Ducks and
geese should have plenty of food and hang around a little long-
er than last season.
At this time several commercial fishermen, who are under con-
tract with the Game & Fish Commission, are fishing on Lake
Whitney. These men are removing rough fish and trying to help
sport fishing. Fishermen have been known to destroy their nets
and take out the fish. I want to remind this type of fisherman
that it* is a heavy penalty to be caught running commercial
nets.
It is a good time of year to watch for snakes, since they are
moving into hibernation. Also, hunting season is here and don’t
forget to get that hunting license. Good luck fishing and hunt-
ing and be sure to be careful with firearms.
Your game warden,
mg
Biggest and best fish usually are caught during the winter
months.
However, there are fewer fishermen--and too many good cat-
ches never are reported. This results in poor publicity for Lake
Whitney when actually fishing usuaHy is pretty good.
Lake Whitney Association is sponsoring a mid-winter fish-
ing tournament to encourage fishermen to weigh-in their best
catches. Monthly prizes will be given for the biggest bass and
and largest crappie caught in November, December, January
and February. Champion winter fishermen will receive appro-
priate trophies at the conclusion of the four-month contest.
In addition to the Association prizes, several commercials
plan to give prizes to their customers catching the best fish.
No entry fee is required. Anglers may weigh their big bass
and crappie at any camp or commercial displaying an Associa-
tion membership certificate.
In charge of the mid-winter tournament is the Association’s
game and fish committee composed of Chairman Elmo Smith,
L. H. Clymer, Bert Howell and Ray Gay.
