The mass meeting of the fire depart-
ment will be held at the truck house to-
night for,the purpose of hearing reports
of the various committees appointed
several weeks since. Nearly all of .the
committees are ready to report, and it
is more than likely that the progress
made will be very satisfactory. All fire-
men ought to make it so they can be on
hand and lend theirjpresence and mite
toward pushing the good work.

The Calico Carnival.
The calico carnival, given by the
ladies.of the Presbyterian church, at
Miller hall last night, was decidedly a
success, from a financial as well as a so-
cial standpoint. Extensive preparations
had been^nade for a large crowd; and,al-
though the weather was threatening, the
good ladies who managed the entertain-
ment were not disappointed.
The halls, both upstairs and down-
stairs, were tastefully decorated with
vines and evergreens. f
Upon payment of the entrance fee
everyone was provided a badge, enti-
tling them to refreshments, which were
served upstairs.
The feature of the program most en-
joyed was the spelling bee. Prof. S. H.
Flake gave out the words, and, though
some of them were easy, the spell-
ers would stumble over them, and
finally have to take their seats.
The receipts, after deducting all ex-
penses, amounted to >86.50.
