Preacher Mt Vernon Church of Christ
THE 1NTRODL CT1ON OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
All church historians agree that instrumental music was
not a part of Christian worship during the early centuries of
the Christian era As a matter of fact, those early Chnsitans
viewed instrumental music as a corrupt, decadent part of
pagan worship At the nearby temple of Zeus the typical
Christian could bear the groans of the hydraulic organ, the
clanging of brass cymbals, the bolster.ous singing of half
drunken men All of this uproarious activity was what the
pogsn* called “worship to the Deity " Christians of course
stayed away from these temples They also used a spiritually
dignified style rf music in their worship to the true God They
sar« praises to God “a cappella" (a Latin expression which
literally means “in the manner of the church ’)
In the early fourth century, however, several factors led to
the first introduction of instrumental music The Lord's
church was by this time well on Its way along the path to
apostasy Already the authority of the New Testament
(wtoch retained the commands rf Jesus for Christian
worship) was bring de-empbasued But then in 313 A D
the Roman emperor Constantine legalized the Christian
reirfion and thia the era rf persecubon was finally over
Because Chriariarnty had now become politically and
ecawmicaily popular, the ciarch was flooded with new
convert* who had formerly been pagans In some locations
(serially in Rome) these new converts were numerous
enoirfh to damawl the introduction rf instrumental music
After *0. “if it was pleasing to Zeus, it ought to be pleasing to
