A family funeral in Idaho caused me to
fly on a commercial airliner last week, just
nine days after the terrorist attacks on our
nation using commercial airplanes as weap-
ons. DFW Airport was a ghost town, and that was scary
The extent to w hich this event has crippled the airline indus-
try was very apparent in those vacant halls and waiting ar-
eas. Intellectually, we know that flying is safer now than it
ever has been, but the knee-jerk, the emotional side of the
brain still sees those big airplanes as weapons. Security did
not seem as tough in Dallas as it was in Boise, but I took no
carry-on luggage. Robbie Shorty, my stepdaughter, who flew
out of Austin, got a real taste of security, however, as they
searched her bugs. ..twice. And maybe the arrests in Aus-
tin and San Antonio later on in the week led to the ticket
agent also searching her bags w hen she left Brnse on Sun-
day She insisted that her number just came up. but we all
made the normal, tiled jokes about her being suspicious look-

Although Boise is not a place I might have chosen to go,
the city is pretty and clean. I set a new record on going
down one-way streets the w rong way as I drove around
downtown. On Saturday morning, an estimated 30.000
* omm and guts participated in the annual 'Tbtebmtien'' 5K
wndk in downtown Bone. Everyone had flag m hand, or stuck
in a pony tail. The event, designed to promote fitness and
health far women, became a red. white and bhm. patriotic
parade.
