cakes in center of a baking pan.
Lay slices of apple around sau-
sages. Sprinkle with brown sur
gar. Bake about fifteen minutes
in a moderately hot oven (400
degrees F.). Baste frequently.

Steak In the Garden.
(Serves 4 to 6)
Two pounds round steak cut
1 1-2 Inches thick, flour, salt, pep-
per, mustard, 8 white onions, 4
carrots, 1 green pepper, 6 peeled
potatoes, 3 tablespoons shorten-
ing.
- With a potato masher pound

Then season with salt and pepper.

Louise Taylor, principal of the
London elementary school turned
down sn offer made her this week
by Dr. A, W. Birdwell, head of
Stephen F. Austin College, to
j become a member of the demon-
1 stration on faculty of that school,
according to R, L. Bunting,
London school superintendent.
“Although the offer was at-
tractive and would have given
Miss Taylor a position as super-
visor she felt that her opportunity
was here in the London system
ano therefore refused it,” Bunt-

BORGER. Texas, Jan. 28 (UP).
- Ben Chapman, former Borger
policeman, was sentenced to life
in the penitentiary today after a
District Court jury found him
guilty of the murder of Constable
Lee Hutson.
The Jury returned a verdict of
“murder with malice afore-
thought” late yesterday after de- j
liberating two hours.
Both Chapman and his victim
were veteran peace officers of the
days when Borger wore the repu-
tation of being “the toughest i
town in the United States.”
Hutson was shot to death on I
the night of Dec. 14. as he, Chap- |
man and a Hutchinson county ;
Deputy Sheriff were t '
from a trial in a nearby county.
Testimony was given that
three were drinking.
HlntergWit Roast.
(Serves 4 to 6)
• pounds pot roast, 2 table-
lard, or 1 tablespoon lard
tablespoon bacon drippings,
p-4 cup clear vegetable stock, salt
and pepper,. 2 cups cleaned raw
cranberries, 2 whole cloves, 1
clove garlic, flour, 1-4 teaspoon
sugar. Wipe pot roast with damp
cloth. Dredge with flour. Heat
shortening in large iron kettle.
Drop garlic into hot shortening.
Cook 2 minutes, then remove.
Brown pot roast In flavored short-
4 enlng on all sides. Season with
salt and pepper. Stick cloves into
meat. Add water and cranberries
to kettle. Cover. Bake in moder-
ate oven (350 degrees F.) for at
least two hours, until meat Is ten-
der. Remove meat to large hot
platter. Thicken red sauce in pot
with flour, then serve as gravy.
When cooking either of these

dishes, select other foods that can
he oven-cooked at the same time.

This novel feature is being spon-
sored by the Magnolia Petroleum
Company who has contracted with
tl)e owner of this wonderfully
trained animal, Meeks Germany
of Grand Saline, for exhibitions
throughout the state.
Outstanding among the many
tricks of the horse, is his ability
to add, subtract and distinguish
colors along with many other
marvelous features. The exhibi-
tions are being staged mainly for
the entertainment of the children
but Is proving equally as popular
