SACRAMENTO, Calif. 11 TP l -
A state system of compulsory
health insurance, supported by
Gov. Colbert L. Olsnn and opposed
by the State Medical Association,
was defeated by ■ the California
Assembly last night, 48 to 20.
The hill provided for a pro-
gram estimated to cost $60,000,000
a year for medical benefits and
hospitalization for employes earn-
ing less than $3,000 annually.
Compulsory employe and employer
contributions would have financed
the plan.
The defeated measure prompt-
ed the State Medical Association
to organize a voluntary insurance
program, it is limited to employed
groups of five or more persons
earning less than $3,000 .a year.
For $2.50 a month per person,
subscribers receive complete medi-
cal and surgical care.
Under the profession's plan,
patients may choose their own
doctors who are paid standard
sums by the California Physi-
cians service.
