A lot of folks don’t look
at their young cotton very
much except to see if they
have a stand or not. These
early season insects are
very serious and can
cause a lot of trouble.

News From Your . , .

By BOB WALSH
We have been called out
to look at a lot of Coastal
Bermuda plantings in the
past few days. Many of
these stands of grass are
being choked out and 1
slowed down by weed and
grass growth. Recent
rains have delayed and in
some cases prevented
folks from spraying to kill
these weeds. This is a bad
situation and is going to
cause some people to be
upset with the perform-
ance of their Coastal.
One weed in particu-
lar that is causing a lot
of trouble is called Night-
shade. This is the plant
that has a purple bloom
and then forms a little
seed pod that looks like a
small tomato. If you are
still going to try some
control on this weed you
are going to have to use
one quart of 2-4-D per
“The tradin’st monkeys in acre plus one half pint of
town.” MI 5- 8962. 2-4-5-T. This weed is
getting mature now and
is going to be hard to kill.
Also to be remembered
is the fact that this partic-
ular plant is poisonous to
livestock. Ordinarily they
do not eat the plant but
sometimes when a herb-
icide is applied they will
eat it. It might be better
to defer grazing where
large numbers of these
plants have been sprayed.

People have been call-
ing in lately about a dis-
ease that is working on
their fruitless mulberry
trees. I have identified the ■
disease as leaf spot caus-
ed by a fungus called Cer-
cospora. This doesn’t tell
us much I guess but we do
know how to control it
and I feel that control will
not be too difficult.
You can spray your
trees with a fungicide
called Zineb. Mix one or.
two tablespoons of Zineb
in a gallon of water. After
mixing thoroughly spray,
the trees with this solut-
ion. You will have to re-
peat this spray applicat-
ion several times at
weekly intervals until the
disease clears up.

Pecan spraying time is
near and it looks now as
though the first applicat-
ion for control of the Pe-
can Nut Casebearer
should be put on the last
week in May. More de- '
tailed information con-
cerning this spraying of |
pecan trees can be found
in another article in this
paper.
