The Castro cabinet lias been forced
to resign and a new and progressive
ministry has been appointed by Juan
Vicente Gomez, the acting president.
The attempt upon the life of Gomez
was frustrated by the coolness, nerve
and courage and daring of the acting
president himself. Alone and unsup-
ported, he arrested the ringleaders of.
the conspiracy and with his own hands
in the presence of their armed adher-
ents and after his action lie issued a
proclamation saying that not only had
he saved his own life, but he had main-
tained the highest' ideals of the chief
magistracy of the republic.
Already the new administration
shows signs of a desire and intention to
settle the disputes between Venezuela
and certain foreign' powers that have
kept the republic in a light of unen-
viable notoriety for several years past.

The parents separated some time ago
and the mother, it is said, placed the

neglected and forsaken by men and
women beastly drunk.

Jefferson City, Mo., Dec. 23.—The
supreme court of Missouri today up-
held the contentions of the attorney
general in the ouster suit of the state
against the Waters-Pierce Oil Com-
pany, s the Standard Oil Company of
Indiana and the Republic Oil Company
of Ohio, fining each of the defend-
ants $50,000.
The decision forbids them ever again
to do ’ business in Missouri, and dis-
solves the Waters-Pierce Oil Company
of St. Louis. The order dissolving the
Waters-Pierce Oil Company will be-
come effective Jan. 15 next unless the
company on or before that date fur-,
nishes to the supreme court satisfac-
tory evidence that it intends to oper-
ate as an independent concern.
WHAT THEY'DID.
The court says the companies <
spired:
1. To regulate and fix prices to
tail dealers.
2. To control and limit trade in the
refined products of petroleum.
3. To control and limit and prevent
competition in the buying and selling
of these products.
4. To deceive and mislead the public
into the belief that they were separate
and distinct corporations, pursuing in-
dependently their business as legiti-
mate competitors.
LONG-STANDING S UIT.
The suit to oust the three compa-
nies was instituted by . Attorney Gen-
eral Hadley in 1905 and evidence was
taken by a special commissioner in St.
Louis and New York., It has been be-
fore the state supreme court for more
than a year. The opinion was written
by Judge Woodson. All seven of the
judges concur, and Judges Graves and
Lamb wrote separate concurring opin-
ions. 'Judge Lamb, concurring as to
the action against the Standard Oil
Company and the Republic Oil Compa-
ny adds that in his belief the Waters-
Pierce Oil Company should be fined a
million dollars instead of fifty thou-
sand. Judge Graves, in his opinion,
thinks tlie Waters-Pierce company
should not be dissolved. He said the
evidence showed that H. Clay Pierce,
who owns 40 per cent of the capital
tock of the company, did all in his
power to prevnt it from going into the
trust, even losing his position as presi-
dent of the company on that account.
The minority stockholders, Judge
Graves, says could not help themselves
and they should be paid.

Caracas, Venezuela, Dec. 12, via Wil-
lemstadt, Curacao, Dec. 23.—That Pres-
ident Castro was implicated in a plot
to asgasinate the acting president of
the republic, Gomez, is the accusation
filed in the high federal court. The
downfall of the Castro administration
followed the frustration of the plot on
Saturday last.
There
of the
Caracas
tary general in the ■ last Castro cabi-
net, and who was placed in charge of
. President Castro’s personal business in
Venezuela when the president left for
Germany. The conspirators decided
upon a coup d’etat. They determined
to assassinate Acting President Gomez,
Jose Jesus de Paul, the foreign min-,
ister; Gen.. Leopolao Baptista and oili-
er prominent men, seize the adminis-
tration and with the army terrorize
and overrawe the population.
Torrez Cardenas, who was at one
time minister under President Castro
'and later his personal secretary, was
the. active leader of the conspiracy.
He v.’as entrusted with the carrying
out of the plot. He had his lieuten-
ants, commanders of three battalions.
In spite of the precautions taken, an
intimation Of what was on foot reached
the ears of Acting President Gomez.
As soon as he had satisfied himself
of the truth of the reports, lie took
immediate steps to frustrate the at-
tempt. Early Saturday morning he
went home, on foot, to tae barracks in
Caracas, where a mutinous regiment
under the command of president Cas-
tro’s brother was quartered. With
cool courage, lie entered the building
and placed the brother of the president
under arrest. The nerve of Vice Presi-
dent Gomez made it possible for him
to carry out this dangerous maneuver
successfully.
He then went to the Yellow house,
the executive mansion, where he had
a brief interview with Torres Carde-
nas. The chief conspirator denied the
existence of any plot. Gomez would
not be deceived by such assurances.
He seized Torres Cardenas by the
shoulders and shaking him 'roughly,
said: “I have discovered your plot to
assassinate me. You are my prisoner.”
TRIES TO KILL GOMEZ.
Torres Cardenas tried to use his re-
volver on the acting president, but
Gomez was too quick for him. He
pinioned the man’s arms and called
the guard. Torres Cardenas was seized,
disarmed and hurried away to jail. The
two arrests, single-handed by Gomez,
broke the back of the plot. Gomez’s
friends came forward quickly to his
support. Orders were at once issued
for the arrest of Gabrias Guseman, Lo-
pez Baralta, minister of the interior
in the cabinet, -who w.;s forced to re-
sign Dec. 17; Senor Bermtrdez, head
of the national telegraph 'system; Com-
mander Casanova, Command Angulo
and other adherents of Castro sus-
pected of complicity. As soon as tlie
news of the sensational occurrences
became known throughout the city?/ an
immense crowd gathered in the Plaza
Bolivar and gave unmistakable evi-
dence of its satisfaction with the turn
affairs had taken.
The Bank of Venezuela lias sent tel-
egraphic communication to its repre-
sentatives at Berlin and Paris report-
ing the occurrences of the day.
There is to be a general reorganiza-
tion of the government, as the fall of
President Castro leaves no obstacle in
the way of settling the various ques-
tions confronting tne republic. Jose
Jesus de Paul, the former minister of
foreign ’’affairs, who played a promi-
nent part in all Venezuela’s foreign
relations for the last six months, has
.been commissioned to go to Europe to
settle all outstanding disputes with
foreign powers. He .will leave here
