WASHINGTON, July 5 lOBi—
Back.stairs at the White House:
At the last news conference,
President Eisenhower looked up at
the clock as the met ting ended and
■aid, "Those fellows worked me
overtime tot lay."
He was referring to the. fact that
the conference ran until 11:06 a. m.
He likts to hold the.weekly ses-
sion with reporters to 11 o'clock if
possible.
Doughty Sir Winston rode in an
American car only from the air-
port to the White House upon his
arrival. The rest of the time dur-
ing his Washington stay, he rode
in the gleaming black Rolls Royce
of the British Embassy.
The embassy chauffeur was fussy
about fingerprints on the car. If a
bystander showed any signs of
touching the highly polished vehi-
cle, the British driver curtly or-
dered "hands off."

OPEN LATE EVENINGS
The White House hasn't seemed'

many years as it did last week
when Mr. and Mrs. Eisenhower

As they waltzed in the east room
with old Army friends and to the
music of the orchestra from the
Marine band, it occurred to tht
President and the first lady that
' it was the first time they had
danced together since 1938.

Some of Mr. Eisenhower's best
friends are photographers. Some of
the cameramen who cover him ev-
ery day at the White House were
photographic corres pendents as
asigned to his headquarters in
World War II, and again, during
his 1952 campaign. They like him
as a person and would never do
anything to harm him.
So, it is with some understand-
ing that they don't like it wher
White House functionaries are or-
dered to string tip lines of heavy
metal chain toehold-bask the cam
eramen at a precise and predter-
mined distance. When Mr. Eisen-
hower and ChurchiH posed for pic-
tures in the White'House rose gar-
den, the photographers were re-
strained by chain 15 feet from tht
principals. '
When Mr. Eisenhower has t
group of congressmen and'senators
in his office for the signing of a
bill,. frequently he presents then
with pens used to affijc his signa-
ture an<& the date. He has learnec
that "the lawmaker? go away hap
pier if they are not ink-stained.
Consequently, the chief executivi
dips a pen into an inkwell onh
>nce, scratches out part of his
tame, lays the pen on a blottei
-and starts out again with a nev.
pen.
"I've learned never to re-dip t
pen," he said the other day.

WASHINGTON, July 6 (EE)—
rhe Senate Internal Security sub-
ommittee Tuesday launched new
rearings intended to show that
Communists infiltrated the Army's
information and Education Serv-
,ee in World War II.
Chairman William E. Jenner
i R-Ind.) said the subcommittee at
i a. m. est would try to find the
Communist "pattern" so the gov-
ernment will know what to guard
igainst in a future war.
A Aspokesman said witnesses
vould include Ralph DeToledano.
writer on communism, and others,
vho were active in the Army I&E
urogram.
Jenner said the hearings "are
■xpected to show how Communists
.vorking behind the scenes used
I he Army Information and Educa-
ion Service in an effort to indoct-
rinate eight million GI's who are
iow back in civilian life."

NEW YORK, July 6
Ainerican evangelist Billy Graham
was to arrive here Tuesday (8:15
a. in. est) aboard the Queen Mary
after his five-month "Crusade for
Christ" in seven European coun-
tries where he preached to more
than 2.5 million persons.
Baptists' repersentatives planned
to give the handsome, 35-year-old
revivalist a dockside welcome in
recognition of his "triumphant
tour" which covered Britain Swed-
en, Finland, Denmark, Holland,
Germany and France.
Graham ended his religious re-
