THE VARIOUS species at
grasshoppers attack nearly aU
cultivated as well as wild plants.
They do a tremendous amount of
dataage especially when in large
groupa Yet most home garden-
ers are not particularly antag-
onistic to them. Instead of tolerat-
ing them, the pests should be
given the “back of the hand.”
The grasshopper is a “chew-
ing insect" It has a mouth
equipped with sharp jaws for bit-
ing off pieces of a plant. It win
eat any part of almost any plant.
The pests often are so ravenous
they wiB strip the leaves from
plants, devour fruits and even
bite off the tender sterna. They
continue to feed until frost.
A damaged leaf which served
as a tidbit for a grasshopper is
shown in the accompanying Gar-
den-Graph. Also illustrated is an
adult grasshopper, one of a nu-
