Twenty-six teams in
volleyball tourney
Twenty-six teams from five
area towns are competing this
week in a volleyball tourna-
ment at the Canadian high
school gymnasium.
Sixteen women's teams and
ten men's teams are in the
action, which opened Tuesday
night with eight of the women's
teams playing first-round
action. Eight more will be in
action tonight (Thursday) with
games beginning at 5:30
o'clock.
The men's teams will be
playing Friday night, beginning
at 5 o'clock.
Semi-finals and finals are
scheduled Saturday night,
beginning at 6 p.m.

the high school Physical
Education Department. Bill
Cross is the tournament
director.
An entry fee of $5 is charged
each team in the tournament,
and admission at each session is
50 cents per person. The
concession stand is open during
all the games.
Varsity track
team 10th at
Panhandle
The Canadian Wildcat varsi-
ty track team placed tenth in a
field of twenty-one teams at the
Panhandle Relays at Panhandle
Saturday.
The Wildcat thin-clads scored
22 points. Shamrock won the
meet with 104 points, Memphis
was next with 69, Clarendon
third with 58. Others, in order,
were Groom 40, Panhandle 30,
Follett 26, Spearman and Boys
Ranch 25 each, Childress 23,
Canadian 22, White Deer 21,
Wheeler 14, Lefors 12, Alamo
Catholic and Vega 9 each,
Stinnett 7, McLean 1.
Adrian, Claude, Higgins,
Miami and Texline did not
score.
Lonnie Hines was second in
the 330-yard Intermediate
hurdles in 42.8 seconds; Bill
Barnard was third in the
440-yard dash in 53.7 seconds;
Donald Hill was 2nd in Pole
Vault and Calvin DeWitt was
6th in the Mile Run.
The team will compete at
White Deer on Saturday, with
preliminaries beginning at 9:30

Canadian netters win
C-division at Borger
Canadian high school netters
won the Division C champion-
ship at the invitational tennis
tournament in Borger last
week-end, and had semi-final-
ists in Divisions A and B at the
tournament.
Tresea Williams and Bob Fite
both reached semi-finals in
singles in Division A. Tresea
Williams won in the opening
round from the Perryton
singles representative in
straight sets, 6-0 6-0, but lost
her semi-final match to the
Borger netter 6-3, 6-3.
Bob Fite defeated tbe
Phillips singles player 6-1 6-1 in
the opening round, and lost his
semi-final match to Perryton
6-2 6-3.
In Division B, Sue Swanson
lost her singles match to an
Amarillo contestant 6-2, 6-0;
Steve Johnson lost to Borger
6-3 6-3; and the doubles team of
Roy Lee Todd and Ricky
Bucher lost to Borger 6-2, 6-3.
In Division C, Britt Reid

David Ray and Robert
Sessions, sons of Mr. and Mrs.
Roy E. Sessions of Van Buren,
Arkansas have each been
named Arkansas State Wrest-
ling Champions in their weight
classes. David Ray is 12 years
old and weighs 80 pounds.
Robert is 10 and weighs in at 74
pounds. The competition was
held in early March in Van
Buren.
Both boys will compete in Bi-
District championship matches
between Arkansas and eastern
Oklahoma wrestlers.
The wrestlers are the
grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. Roy
Sessions and Mr. and Mrs. E. R.
Cloyd of Canadian.
advanced to the semi-finals and
lost to Dalhart 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Shannon McDaniel lost to
Spearman 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Amelia Brock won the
C-Division girls singles champ-
ionship, defeating Dalhart 6-2
6-1, and Neysia Peil and Janeal
Flathers won the girls doiibles
championship in that division
6-0 6-0, also defeating Dalhart
Joe Anderson and Eugene
Sword reached the semi-finals,
losing to Dalhart 4-6, 66, 8-6.
The team claimed the
Division C title with 21 points.
7th graders
finish 5th at
Graver meet
Canadian Junior High 7th
graders placed 5th in a track
meet at Gruver last Friday,
scoring 51'/ points.
Scott Hines was 5th in the
100-yard dash; John Keeton 5th
in the 50-yard dash; Richard
Bailey 3rd in the 880-yard run;
Pete Cooper 3rd in the 440-yard
dash; Micah Lewis 2nd in the
60-yard High Hurdles and 5th
in the 100-yard Low Hurdles.
The 880-yard relay team of
Ray Price, John Keeton, Pete
Cooper and Scott Hines placed
4th.
Don Ishmael was 1st in high
jump at 4 feet 10 inches; Scott
Hines was 3rd in long jump at
14 feet 4Vi inches; and Ronnie
Hill was 6th in discus at 81 feet
10 inches.
The 8th grade 440-yard relay
team of Randy Bowerman, Clay
Flathers, Kyle Beasley and Lee
Chumbley placed 4th.
Boys 7th and 8th grade and
Freshman track teams will
travel to Clarendon Friday for a
meet; and the girls 7th and 8th
grade teams will be a Perryton
Saturday.
