(UP Staff Correspondent)
Llttie Swuam Lake, N. H.. July 29
(UP) — People have been rowing, Texas since
rowboats since time Immemorial, and
st became ^ery apparent to rpe today,
l out on little Squam Lake, that nobody
has ever devoted much thought to the
, technique which is necessary to get [
i anywhere.
My only complaint against a row- i
; boar is the oui auu oui fact that you r . - ■
' go backwards. You can't see where ! 'nt0 *^*25—5.
you are going. You look one-way and
go the other. This is as eiUy'gs asking
a fireman to put out a fire by turning
the hose on himself.
This rowboat business got me to
thinking. I thought of the Phoenicians
| who first circumnavigated Sicily; I
' thought of Caesar going bar kwards ,
; across the Rubicon; I thought of Noah 1
1 coming into Ararat in reverse gear;
j and I thought of George Washinton
| crossing the Delaware without even
seeing what was on the other side,
it doesn't make sense.
Today I aimed my rowboat for a lit-
tle cove across the lake where the pick-
erel have been biting for the last few
I days. The cove was approximately
one mile away as time flies. I am
not there yet. I gave up, after going '
I zig-zag. criss-cross, in circles, and in j
the general direction of Minnesota.
It was an exciting trip and I learned j
much about Little Squam's Flora and
Fauna, to say nothing of much sea j
lore. I can't stand this 'business of !
pointing out a place where I want to I
go, turning my back to it, and heatin' |
on a couple of sticks to get to it.
There are a thousand things nautl-1
— ------ a rowboat. The 1
front end of a boat, that pointed part. 1
■ is not called a front end. That's the
. ion way to the men who go j
bone to chew— down to the Seas in ships. The thing
you sif on is not a seat. It's a star
very dark— board. Nobody who knows anything
about the sea would call an oar an J
oar. To marines it’s a barnacle. Nel- I
ther would they speak of going to the
kitchen and, getting a slice of bread.
They'd go to the bridge for some eight
bells.
All of which leads to but
elusion, one burning truth,
and <Jre vital things and have
