THAT'S WHAT I mean." San-
dra said in a soft voice to Mrs Fen-
nimore 'I'll jolly well come dash-
ing back to you" kept ringing in
her ears The British boy's remark
had all the Insolence of a Chicago
urchin's 'Phooey to you'" or some
other similar insult.
The boy spoke up: "What did you
say. Miss Edwards?”
“I was speaking to Mrs Fenni-
more.”
“Oh. 1 beg your pardon ' Spenser
began handing the filled teacups,
passing them with a skill that
astounded the young dressmaker.
She said again to her friend:
"You see, don't you?"
“Dear Sandra,” murmured Mrs
Fennimore, in a vague sounding
way. Really the words held no
vagueness It was as if she had or-
dered: “Hush. Sandra!”
“Aren't we cozy?” the older
woman asked a while later, “hav-
ing our tea up here? All the other
children are having it In the dining
room.” Her eyebrows shot upward
Interrogatively. "Perhaps you'd
rather be with them, Spenser."
Miraculously, with a mouthful of
cake and the slice suspended be-
neath his lips, ready for another
attack, the English child had an
unbelievable amount of dignity.
“No, Mrs Fennimore. I like It
here."
Sandra sipped her tea, watching
the boy. striving to decipher that
dignity. It probably was the
glasses, she decided And the rough
tailored jacket with Its stiff took.
The starched white shirt collar
The wide, unwrinkled necktie. Yet
it was more than horn-rimmed
spectacles and stfffish clothes
Everything abcut him contributed
to that dignity, that British reserve
that he used for a shel'er until he
was ready to cast it aside and smite
someone with his own brand of at-
tack
Mrs Fennimore was repeating
“You really should stay here a
while, Spenser, so we could study
your reactions, but I have a pretty
good idea what they will be."
And so have I. shouted the
glance Sandra was throwing in the
direction of the child welfare
worker. It Infuriated the girl—Mrs
FFhnimore's Indifference, because
she knew the older woman was
aware of the emotions of everyone
She kept on talking: “But Miss

Your behavior, too. Spenser"
That remark was the first the
child psychologist had made that
failed to hold partiality for the
refugee, he sensed her mild rebuke
and stiffened Instantly he recov
ered his perfect manner
"Righto." he agreed, and smiled
Without the benefit of Mrs Fen-
nimore’s presence Sandra's sensa-
tion of awkwardness returned
She and the boy were walking down
the front steps, each feeling de-
serted and showing It in different
ways Spenser was net smiling
now; he was sober to the point of
sulkiness
Sandra was again experiencing
the trembling that too often both-
ered her. She despised herself for
feeling as she did. If I can't handle
an 11-year-old boy I need a new
brain, she was commenting Inside
the one she had used for 24 years
It struck her that she was living
her life by leaps and bounds, today,
simply by sitting In easy chairs. In
her office chair she had recalled
her years at Wakeman-Benet. In
a chair at Mrs Fennimore's she had
looked toward those ahead. And
worried. Mainly because of the lit-
tle boy at her side
Only he was not at her side
now. He startled her from her
meditation.
“Where are you going. Spen-
ser?”
"To your motor.” He was mak-
ing his way toward a costly town
car at the curb.
"That's not my car," she cried
The boy stopped deadstill. "Then
where is your machine?”
"I don’t have one."
“I’m dashed!” Puzzlement over
this revelation lifted his eyebrows
and made his eyes larger than
ever. “Actually I am "
“Oh, come on!” she said in soft
exasperation. She was attempting
to keep their slight argument from
the ears of the chauffeur. Plainly
