Occasion of real scientific interest was this in South Philadel-
phia as savants gathered to watch the fitting of the last bolt into
the skeleton structure of the 200-irich Mt. Palotnar telescope.
The gigantic mounting shown here Is the tube for the 500?ton
“eye” which should be in operation by 1940.

Man’s
Universe Proves Staggering Task
pASADENA, Calit—Distin-
guished scientists gathered
around the 850-ton steel frame-
work of the world’s largest tele-
scope in South. Philadelphia the
other day and discussed the
time in 1940 when man expects-
to double, ewn triple, his visual -
knowledge or the universe.
The occasion was the fitting
of the last bolt into the welded
structure of the 200-inch, $2,-
000,000 “eye” which is to be in-
stalled atop Mt. Palomar, near
here, in the next three years.
The “eye” itself was transported
across the country on a special
train several months ago. There-
in lies one of the most amazing
stories of astronomical science
It began in 1028,. In that yeay,
plans were laid'for the construc-
tion of the world’s biggest tele-
scope in the hope (hat new won-
ders of the heavens would be
opened to man. Six years later,
after”thc most meticulous prep-
rirations, the pouring of the gi-
ant mold took place on Dec 1,
1931. A total of 104 ladles of
molten glass were poured at -a
ti'mper.ituie one-fifth as hot as
thf-sun. rt
A full year was taken to cool
this rna^x, degree by degree,
room tern perat ute. Finally,,
special car ciirrit’d the rough
