CIIAR1 TA RLE ENTER PR ISE.
Tlx* county commissioners yesterday
afternoon were visited by a comm it tec* <»f
1 the ladies who are interested in the es-
' tablishment of the Good Samaritan
Home. The visit was for the purpose of
asking the county to make a monthly do-
nation to tlx* support of tlx* Home. Upon
arriving at tlx* court house tlx* ladies
discovered that tlx* commissioners had
already voted to set aside $2."> a month
for this laudable enterprise but upon be-
{ ing appealed to by tlx* ladies and their
j attorney TV. R. .Tones the court took the
matter of increasing the subscription mi-
lder advisement and at Ibis morning's
session tlx* matter was left in the hands
of County Judge Goodrich with author-
ity to increase tlx* donation not to ex cede
$50 per month.
Judge .Tones yesterday read to the
court from tlx* new law passed by the
I last legislature making it mandatory for
; counties in Texas to provide hospitals
: for tlx* care of homes of this nature. He
also spoke at length to tlx* court on the
subject his words being both eloquent
| and convincing. Tie pointed to our
splendid new $200000 court house our
new $20000 jail our handsome churches
our many costly homes and asked if it
would not be consistent that the county
should aid in the maintenance of tlx*
humble little charity hospital which a
few women of Brownsville have been
struggling so long to keep going. Judge
Goodrich has assured the ladies that he j
will extend as lilieral support as possi-
ble to the Home.
The city council last evening also Voted
$2.i per month to tlx* Home.

INDICTMENT DISMISSED
FORMER POLICEMAN CRAFTS RE
TURNS IMMUNE TO ARREST—
FAREWELL ADVENTURE IN MAT
AMOROS.
The indictment returned l»v the grand
jury a year ago against William Crafts
a former Brownsville policeman was dis-
missed in tin* district court this morning.
Since the indictment was returned Crafts
has been in Mexico having come recently
to Matamoros. lie returned to Browns-
ville this morning.
While on the streets of Matamoros yes-
terday afternoon Crafts who is an Am-
erican citizen was threatened with ar-j
rest as a revolutionist by Antonio Echa-!
zaretti. an officer of the volunteers in
Matamoros. Ricardo Posada who is a
brother-in-law of Crafts was near and j
interested Mayor Barragan in the mat-1
ter. with the result that Crafts was not
further molested. lie immediately
sought refuge in the American consulate
however and spent the night there.
It is thought that the threat of Echa-
zaretti was tin* result of some feeling he
holds against the Brownsville police on
account of their having tired at him one
night about a year ago. when he was for
some unexplained reason fleeing from
them on the streets of Brownsville.
Crafts declares however that he was not
one of those who fired on Echazaretti.
but. on the contrary says he-protected
the man and took him to the city hall
that night for safe keeping. The real
reason for the police chase after Echa-
zaretti and his detention that night has
never been made public. He was after-
wards permitted to go across the river
but seems still to have a grudge against
the Brownsville police. 4
