Dave Spero who sju*«» jt„ organization
nwo years ago has been president of the
Brow nsviHe Rotary Club in welcoming his
successor gave a brie! history’ of the or-
ganization. lie told how. through the as-
sistance of “Daddv” C. .1. Boothrovd of
Corpus Christi the Rotary sprit has been
horn hi Brownsville and how it had Iteen
kept alive. “Since our organization we
have started many things some of ihem
we have finished and some of them we
hae not yet even those things we have not
finished have been helpful to us through
them we have grown stronger and through
them we have grown closer together and;
a spirit of friendship of unity has been
born.
“Through Roiarv wo are welding to-
gether a keenly edged h ghly tempered
‘tool which will become in time an agent of.
tlie advancement of Brownsville which|
nothing can resist." Mr. Spero told of the
i pleasure he had had in serving the club as
'its president of the keen satisfaction he
had felt hi being chosen as head of a body
of such representative men tis those eom-
prising the Brownsville Rotary Club.
To his successor Mr. Spero said: “Jack

The fad that Jack Itowe ;s a good Ro-

many of them had not known that Rowe

had accompli.-bcd both for Brownsville

itself just in proportion to what you pur

urgent ap|>cal to the members to help Ro-j

While Mr. Rowe was talking waiters
had brought forward a flag draped table

to 101M. in recognition of hi- faithful
service.*’ The Brownsville Rotary Club.
It is seldom that men have an oppor-
tunity to hear such glowing praise paid to
themselves and to their work as Mr. Spero
hud from hi" fellow Rotarian. Mr. (Yeag-
er "poke of the former president U" a
“true Rotarian” lovel to lu> obligations
faithful in his attendance nr meetings
ready and wili ng in his service and liberal
iu his payments.
The speaker told of how communities
grew through their natural advantages
what ever they were and through the ef-
forts of such men—umietimes many and
more often few in number—as Dave
Spero* lie said that such men a> Spero
were often forced into positions of prom-
inence and notoriety—that often their
names were in the newspapers and that
jealous people criticized them. ‘This*’ lie
said “is an evidence of narrow minded
jealousy. I wish that Brownsville had
many such RoUirians a- Dave Spero.'*
Having lieen in public works for so
long it is seldom that Dafe Spero is at
loss for words it was with difficulty
however that he mustered his emotions
enough to respond. In a few words he ex-
pressed his gratification at the tribute the
club bad paid h iu for the things he had
accomplished or tried to accomplish lie
told them that his motives had been en-
tirely selfish—that lie wanted to see
Brownsville grow so that Dave Spero
could grow with it that he liked to exper-
ience fhe self - satisfaction of knowing that
I . •
lie was trying to do n good work and that
he liked to receive the expression of that
most divine emotion love as had been
I evidenced by the gift.
In addition to the installation services
t ity Manager W. K. Anderson made a
^hort *aik outlining the development pro-
j grain for which the eitv was about to call
;a bond issue and I)r. W. K. Spivey was
i voted to membership and it was decreed
that hereafter he was to lie known as
“Bil'” Spivey.
The only marring episode of the ocean-
[ion was the resolution offered by the Ro-
jtarian Bill Burnett of the Board of City
j Development arcing the chair to repri-
| rnnnd a newspa|>ermnn present for the
| manner in which he drank his coffee. The
resolution was carried and the reprimand
administered.
