Know then thyself, presume not God to scan,
The proper study of mankind is man.-Pope.
In the complex economic, political, social, and religious situation of
the world today, there arise innumerable problems which demand immediate
attention, but in reality require thought and consideration as a prerequisite
to any sort of plan for a solution. In spite of many improvements, the
world is still burdened with narrow-mindness, intolerance, and greed. A
study of the so-called humanitieses" or, to use a more modern term, the
culture studies, goes a long way toward solving these problems. The hu-
manities include literature, history, sociology, psychology, and economics.
To secure a proper understanding of the humanities one must approach this
study with an open mind and with tolerance. He should have the spirit of
understanding which impelled Thoreau to write, "If a man does not keep
page with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drum-
mer." When so many drums are sounding, it is often difficult to choose
the right one. Longfellow had something akin to this in mind when he
stated, "If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find
in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to diarm all hostility."
Literature is not something which should be read only as part of a
class assignment. It contains the record of the heart-throbs of thousands
of people in particular and Mankind in general.
History contributes the story of the events of mankind. Economics,
a related subject, is not a dry study when viewed in the light of the
immense social and political life with which it has such a close connection.
Sociology and psychology are not mere guess-work, but subjects which
represent sincere attempts to understand the problems of people.
Above all, man should try to understand himself and others. A per-THE GALLEON
