Opening
The member* of the Rotary Club
of Brownsville have received an in-
vitation from the Corpus Christ! Ro-
tarians to attend the port opening
celebration to be held in the coast
citv September 14 and lr>.
Six rears ago when the citizens of
Corpus t'hristi. joined together in a
centra! body were waging their cam-
paign to obtain the government’s
endorsement a* the location for ad-
ditional harbor facilities on the
Texas Gulf coast the Rotary clubs
of Texas were appealed to. to adopt
resolutions endorsing Corpus Chri-ti.
Scores of clubs in the then 18th dis-
trict took action along this iine. the
mass of resolutions being regarded
as of inestimable aid in promoting
the cause of Corpus « hristi.
Now that the Port is about ready
to open to world commerce the Ro-
tarians there have invited the mem-
bers of everv Rotary club in the
state to attend.
The celebration will continue two
days the principal entertainment
features having been arranged for
the first day.

the Officers’ Club at Fort Brown
which was one of a series of infor-
mal danc*s being hejd there weekly.

Mrs. K. R. Slater was hostess to
the Just Sew Flub Wednesday after-
noon at her home in West Browns-
ville.
The numerous vacationing .mem-
bers of the ciuli have somewhat de-
pleted its personnel which normally
numbers nearly a score of member*.
The group that gathered with Mrs.
Slater though small enjoyed a par-
ticularly pleasant afternoon. The
hospitalities of the club *ere ex
tended to Mrs. George M. Woolsey of
Yoakum who is the guest of Mrs.
S. M Harvey.

BIRTHDAY FESTIVITY
The Brownsville Country Flab was
the scene of a birthday festivity |
Tuesday afternoon when forty chil-
dren gathered there in honor of the]

The halls of the clubhouse were
attractive with ouantities of summer
flow* rs. placed in artistic arrange-
ments. and gaylv colored streamers |
adding to the gala appearance of the]
scene.
Games and contests in which the
winners were given appropriate tro-
j hies for success formed the diver-
sion of the afternoon. Before march-
ing into the dining room the boys
were given favors of golfbag and
the girls of jockey hats filled to the
rim with candies.
In the dining room a many-tiered
birthday cake surrounded with seven
burning candles was the center of
attraction. Here the children were
served with refreshment* of ir*
cream and cake.
Master Kaplan received a shower i
of congratulations and gift*.

The Wednesday Bridge Club and
several guests were hospitably en-

Wells on Elizabeth street.
The attraction of already pleasant j
looms was heightened with artistic

players gathered for the ocrarfon. i
The guest prize a dainty luncheon
set. was raptured by Mrs. Homer
Morrow who with Mrs. J. M. Stein
and Mrs. A. N. McKay was a guest
of the club at this met ting.
After the counting of scores and
thd warding of the prize the hostess
reived refresh ment^of marshmallow
whip and cake.
Mrs. John Rutledge will entertain
the Widnesday Bridge Club next
week at her home in West Browns
ville.

atives there some time. From San
Marcos they will go to Houston for
a short stay before going on to
Kingsville to be present at the Ro-
tary executives convention. They
will return to Brownsville the lat-
ter part of next week.

ces Richter of Laredo are visiting
