spent the past month in Chicago and

Mercedes Sunday from a two week’s

SHERIFF VANN IMPROVES
Word was received Wednesday
from Sheriff W. T. Vann. who ia tak-
ing a treatment at Marlin Texas
that he is get'.ing along splendidly
and expects to remain at the hot
springs resort several days longer.
The sheriff's office receives many
inquiries daily concerning his health
and the assurance comes that Mr.
Vann is showing great improvement.

Will Erect New
Show Room
Bids will be open on Friday for a
new building which will house the
Aldridge-Hielscbed Implement com-
pany according to an announcement
made by EG. Holliday architect for
the project. The structure will be
erected on the corner of Fourteenth
and Washington streets.
A one story building of Spanish
design the new building promises
to keep in step with the other new
structures which have been started
recently. Reinforced concrete and
masonry will be used in the con-
struction work. A mezzanine floor
wi! circle the entire interior of the
building adding a great amount of
room for display purposes.
The present location of the imple-
ment company is at 1105 Adams
street. Construction work will be
started as soon as possible afted the
contract is let.
Five Aliens Are
I Caught in Valley
Five alien* including one Italian
three Albanian* and one Uragusyan
have been brought to Border Patrol
headquarter* in Brownsville follow-
ing their arrest near Mission-
The men were arrested by Border
Patrol Inspectors Jack and Jim
Cottingham. and are alleged to have
been emuggled across the Rio
Grande near Mission.
Officers are hunting for the al-
leged smugglers.__
Masons to HoM
Education Meet
A Masoniu Educational meeting
will be held in Brownsville Friday-
night August 26 at 8 o’clock at
which Lilbur Keith executive sec-
retary for the Masonic lodge in the
state of Texas will be the principal
speaker. Similar meetings are be-
ing held in districts through the
state and Brownsville has been chos-
en for the meeting place of this dis-
trict.
The purpose of the meeting i* to
educate all Masonic orders as to the
true value of the work and to fur-
ther explain the nature of the work.
Motion pictures of particular aig-
nificance in an educational way will
be shown at the meeting and several
talks by other prominent Masons
from over the state will be made.

Asphalt Worker Is
Painfully Burned
Pedro Castro working on in as-
phalt gang at Point Isabel auffered
severe burns around tha body Tues-
day when he came into contact with
some hot asphalt- His clothes caught
fire but were torn from him before
he was injured seriously.
Dr. J. G. Church of Brownsville at-
tended to tha injured man and re-
port! that although his bums are
painful and will keep him in bed for
two or three weeka. no serious harm
will coma from them.
Schley to Visit
Valley Thursday
Col. J. L. Schley of Galveston. U.
S. Army engineer in charge of this
district will be in Brownsville
Thursday morning for a conference
with the deep water port committee
states a telegram to G. C. Richard-
son manager of the Brownsville
Chamber of Commerce.
Col. Schley will look over the work
at Point Isabel where the port pro-
ject is rapidly nearing completion.
Local Floats To
Enter Parade
After a conference Wednesday
with Matamoros officials G. C.
Richardson manager of the Browns-
ville Chamber of Commerce an-
nounced that the local organisation
will enter a float in tha great scenic
parade to be staged on the occasion
of Mexican Independence Day Sep-
tember 16 which will be celebrated
in an auspicious way by the city
across the river.
It is likely also that the Lions
Rotary and Kiwanis clubs of
Brownsville will enter floats In the
parade through the special invita-
tion of the city officials of Mata-
raoros.
General Cevera and Zeferino
Peres president of the committee
in charge of the arrangements for
the celebration have announced a
three day fiesta the exercises to
begin September 16 and to end on
the 17th.
There will be a great rodeo event
and a program of boxing and other
athletic sports is being arranged.
In the latter events American box-
ers have been invited to participate.
Daughter Bom to Mr*
And Mrs. Ransome
A baby rirl was born Wednesday to
Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Ransoms of this
city. Both daughter and mother are
reported doing well.
Mr. Ransome is a local attorney
and Mr*. Ransom* was for several
years secretary to R. B. Crasgar.
