SNOW FOR BIANKILLER
Bingham Utah Dec. 25. The dis-
covery of the existence of an old in-
cline leading into the lower workings
of the Utah Apex mine added discour-
agement to the discomfort of the offi-
cers who are waiting in the snow for
Ralph Lopes slayer of six men to ap-
pear at one of the mine openings.
It is probable that the mine will be
opened and searched Friday when It
is hoped to find that the desperado
succumbed either to starvation or poi-
sonous gases which were generated
with smudges nearly a month ago.

saint averted a disaster by pulling off
his whiskers - and extinguished the
blaze with the aid of Lytton Taylor
who was near.

tertainment given by the Presbyterian
Sunday school. Santa Claus had just
made his appearance and had made a
few remarks to the children when his
whiskers ome ir contact with a lighted

SURPRISE IS GIVEN
TO MESILLA PASTOR
Mesilla Park N. M. Dec. 25. Rev. E.
E. Mathes pastor of the Presbyterian
church of Mesilla Park received a
gooa pouncing" at the hands of mem-
bers fit Met congregation. On hearing
a rap at the front door he opened it
expecting to see some friend but in-
stead of seeing someone standing there
waiting for admission he saw a form
moving swiftly away. A little later
there was another rap at the door
which on being opened disclosed an-
other form stealthily moving into the
darkness. A moment later there was
a noise at the rear door and soon
there was the sound of hurrying feet
In a short time there was another
knock at the front door and by this
time things began to look a little sus-
Dicious. But the door was opened
when a voice came through the dark-
ness inquiring if the minister was at
j i . ri v. j t -.
of Dejn rfetef in the eruff voice of
; a marauder a clear and nleasant voice
cried out A Merry Christmas and a
fleeing form could be discerned In the
darkness and soon many scurrying feet
could be heard in the distance. An
investigation being made it was found
that the front porch -was literally cov-
ered with "clubs" suitable for use in
"pounding" the minister and his fam-
ily consisting only of good things to
eat.
It had been planned by the congre-
gation to give the pastor and his fam-
ily "a surprise party." the intention
being for each one to take some token
of "Christmas good will" and then all
spend a social hour togther but owing
to the illness of Mrs. Mathes the idea
had to be abandoned.
