Best Wishes to Jewel Smith,
72, who was baptized in the
First Baptist Church Sunday, 59
years after she accepted the
Lord. “It is something I’ve
always wanted to do,” Ms.
Smith said.
*****
Coyote hunting is a popular
thing nowadays... what with
hides bringing close to $75
apiece, it’s really more than a
pastime; it’s more like a second
job...but hunters are reminded
that spotlighting coyotes and
bobcats, though lucrative, may
also endanger cattle.
In a neighboring county, one
rancher lost a 450 pound heifer,
when a bullet struck her in the
ear and dropped her in her
tracks. A second bullet hit a
steer calf dead center in the
nose and smashed into its brain.
Both deaths were attributed to
spotlight hunters, hunting coyo-
tes from the road...itself an
illegal practice.
I think we have a responsible
group of hunters here...and so
far this year, there have been no
accidents such as this...or none
that I’ve heard about, but it
certainly can, and does happen,
and has happened before in
Cottle county.
The problem of course, is that
the eyes of cattle reflect the
light, just as the eyes of coyote
or bobcat do. Hunters say they
can tell the difference between
the eyes of a steer, and those of
a coyote, but ‘taint always so,
McGee.
You are urged to be very
careful when hunting at night...
be sure where you’re aiming
before you shoot, for goodness
sake.

As I mentioned in last weeks
Chalkboard the elections of
officers and directors for the
coming year was held in the
November regular membership
meeting. Leadership and direc-
tion of our organization for the
future will come from this
group. In addition to President
Bobby Sunday, Vice-President
Joann Love, and Treasurer Jim-
mie B. Jones, Joie Ray Jeter,
Lynn Russell, and Batchy Rhod-
es have joined the board as
directors. Holdover directors
are: Wesley Polk, Charles
Young, Joe Caraway, Danny
Davis, and immediate past pre-
sident, Jim Bob Bigham. I am
confident that this group of
people will do their best to
extend all gains to our com-
munity from past experiences.
Awareness and co-operation
have been the impetus for the
progress which has occurred in
this community over the past
three years. Several factors
have been involved in this
forward progress, not the least
of which is the Paducah Cham-
ber of Commerce. Constant
forward pressure from this or-
ganization can be the key to the
motivation for progress. Your
constant support for its projects
gives stability to a growth
program. Agriculture and petro-
leum are other factors which
have exerted forward pressure
on our economy. Community
education assistance in these
areas can be provided by a
strong Chamber using this in-
dustrial support. Look for good
things to come...
