Judge Dancy Urges
Support For Harris
sCounty's Proposal
S By Valley Voters
BRpWNSVXLLX—County Judge
Boy' Hofheins of Harris county
youngest county Judge In America
will talk in Brownsville at t jx m.
Monday Aug. 2 m the Interests of
Constitutional Amendment No. B to
he voted upon August 23.
Judge Hofheins will also talk in
three other Valley cities. His iten-
erary has been announced as fol-
lows: Bdinburg. 10 a. m.. August 3;
McAllen 12 noon August 2; and
Harlingen 3 p. m.. August 2.
Judge Hofheins will speak at the
Cameron county courthouse in
Brownsville and probably will speak
at the city hall in Harlingen it
was announced Thursday by County
Judge Oscar C. Dancy.
“Cameron county has never sent
up an 8. O. 8. that Houston and
• Harris county did not answer" cites
Judge Dancy “X therefore ask fullest
cooperation in getting as large a
crowd as possible to hear Judge
Hofheins. who by the way is a most
Interesting speaker and also ask
Support for his proposition."
Judge Dfcncy has asked the cooper-
ation in Valley meetings of Mayor
Hugh Ramsey of Harlingen; Sidney
Kxlng manager of Harlingen Cham-
ber of Commerce; O. C. Richardson
manager of Brownsville Chamber of
Commerce; and Sheriff J. A. Gools-
by. .
The Cameron county judge will
actively support the Harris county
measure he has notified Judge Hol-
beins. He also points out that the
Issue involved may pave the way
for federal cooperation on farm to
market roads for all Texas coun-
ties.
While the amendment affects Har-
ris county alone the other 253 coun-
ties must vote on it. The measure
would permit Harris county to make
the experiment of building perma-
nent roads on a •pay-as-you-go"
basis. The amendment is unique in
that it is the first time that a con-
stitutional amendment has been
submitted to be voted on by the
people of TVxas and yet which would
be operative only in one county.
lounges* Judge
"Judge Hofheinz has been most
forceful in his presentation.” Wil-
liam C. Repass managing editor of
the Houston Chronicle declared re-
cently. "He is a former member of
the legislature and is now serving
his first term as county judge. As
a legislator from Karris county he
was the youngest ever elected and
now as county judge likewise is the
youngest ever to hold that position
in this county."
A few months ago. Judge Hofheinz
announced he favored building per-
manent roads on a "pay-as-you-go”
basis and the ending of the old sys-
tem of issuing long-term interest
bearing bonds. The commissioners'
court of Harris county the news-
papers. leading business men and
civic organizations backed the plan
The submission of Constitutional
Amendment No. 5 at the polls Aug-
ust 23 was the result. If it is voted.
Harris county will be permitted to
build roads by voting a direct tax
instead of bends. The savings pos-
sible under the amendment are esti-
mated at $500000 or more a year
in Hams county.
