wanted to make a first class doc-

would attend a university with a

strata to be from five to seven feet,
though in some cases it was found
over twelve feet in thickness. In
this connection it may be well, to
state that Colonel Featherstone, who
has large ore interests in the locali-
ty mentioned, offered to furnish the
lovernment 1,000,000 tons f iron
ore free of coot to it if it would
locate the armor plate pant at
Beaumont or “in the midst of the
ore fields of T-xas." that manga-
neee, a hardening ore or metal,
exists in the Upshur fi Id is beyond
doubt, since specimens of it are in
hand, though its value is unknown.
As to the fuel proposition, this
great ore field is not at 80 great a
aistance from the coal fields of
Oklahoma, and they my be raid, or
al least a part of them anyhow, are
on the boun lary lines of the fields,
but that fuel has not yet been
utilised as fuel in the reduction of
iron ores.
If the great iron and steel corpo-

of that Government as to the
amount and quality of such ore
fields.
The world, under this GovernT
ment certificate, would no longer
beehate to riskits money in iron
manufacturing in Texas. Manu
factoring centers would be develop-
ed and our state would be almost
revolutionized industrially and
com nercially. It would require to*
much space t go into this in detail
But one can not refrain from con
sidering its effect on our perplexing
tenant question. The establish
ment of iron-making factories in
any locality would inevitably pull
the ever hard pressed and landless
tiller of the soil into their ■ walls,
here to be developed into well paid
and skilled workmen. The owners
of farms would till their farms, and
prosper by it,'in feeding the indus
trial manufacturing population
But each man may imagine foi
himself what the results would be
if Texas ehould secure this factory.
■Mt Stand Together
II is barely possible that in arch
a matter influence of individual
and communities may not be of any
force. Be that as it may, on*
thing is certain, and that is tbst on
this occasion, of all occasions, the
people should stand united in get-
ting the priz if it is obtainable
The watchword should be, “Ie the
Government will locate the factory
in Texas, we are all enthusiastically
for the place that it tbinka is the
best place to locate it ”
If nothing results from the effort
to obtain th) armor plate plant in
the way of its location in Texas,
peverthelesa we have been greatly
benefited, for by the discussion of
it we have to some extent been
diverted from our beaten paths of
industrial thought. We preach
much and ,preach long of the
diversification of crops, and the
sermons are of value. But what we
need more of is a diversifisation of
thoughts an ) ideas.
