Governor James E. Ferguson
on Old North Street in the city
of Nacogdoches, your memory
will ha t e to go back just fifty-
seven years ago, for this item is
taken from the Chronicle pub-
lished in that city at that time.
It was a carriage and buggy
manufactory, and the bid for
public patronage is in the form
of an ad. Newspaper adver-
tising at that time was not got-
ten up as it is today. At that
time all advertising was set in
the same size type as reading
matter of the paper, with the
exception of black-face type
used for the headings and in
some instances the signature,
there being no face of type used
in this edition now quoted from
larger than what printers know
as 24-point, with the exception
of the heading of the paper,
which is set in 72-point. That

ered that he could not use the
car to make his getaway. He
heard the train approaching
around the curve, heard the
dogs coming that were on his
trail, and did not have the time
to spare to remove the obstacle,
if he had so desired. He did
the only thing he thought best
to do under the circumstances,
and that was to “beat it," al-
though things were happening
so quickly just at this time that
the train came to a standstill
and the guards from the pen-
itentiary came in sight before
the convict had passed entirely
from view. inasmuch as four
fancy shots were taken at his
fading form in the distance, it
being claimed that one of them
took effect. Still, Mr. Satter-
field says he made inquiry the
next morning as to the outcome
of the chase, and that he was;
informed that up to that time
the negro had not been appre-
hended. It was a little remark-
able. he thought, that the posse
after the convict could have
been so near him, with their
dogs trained for such purpose,
and the further fact that he was
presumed to have been shot,
and still the convict be at large.
He figured, however, that it was
a negro, and that you could
never tell what to expect of
such a character.
In concluding his remarks on
the subject, Mr. Satterfield said
that when he first saw the hand
car on the track in front of him,
and he making the time that
he was, the object reminded
him of “packing house” cover-
ing up the whole right-of-way.
He is thankful and all are
thankful that the result was no
worse than it was.
