A van used to be a workhorse
vehicle. But many Texans have
discovered that, in addition to
allowing them to move furniture,
haul large loads and transport 12
to 15 persons, vans are versatile
enough to serve as all-around
recreational vehicles.
With that realization, vans
have recently become so popular
that more than half a million are
sold nationwide each year at an
average cost of from $6,000 to
$8,000. Our Consumer Protec-
tion Division attorneys point out
that this places van purchases in
the ranks of major consumer
decisions.

THERE’S HOPE of an exciting
B.C. column next week. Your
scribe just made a last-minute
call to city hall for an agenda
update and discovered city sec-
retary Juanelle Cooksey and city
councilperson Eileen Tollett
went to San Antonio for a Texas
Municipal League meeting.
And they got there just in time
for the big San Antonio black-
out.
If anything special happens,
you’ll read it here next week.
Allen’s school system is one of the real “roses” in the city.
And the new Alton Boyd Elementary School should add
even more quality to the system when it is completed in
the next few months. The school is located at Bethany
Drive and Jupiter Road.
DEAR EDITOR,
Winning is not all-important,
but the desire to excel, and the
willingness to work hard to do so
is! Never was this fact more in
evidence than on Monday, Octo-
ber 11, at the Cotton Bowl in
Dallas, Texas.
At approximately 7:30 p.m. in
the evening, after having quali-
fied for the finals that morning,
127 young people from Allen,
Texas took the field and hearts
of hundreds of spectators as they
played, marched and high-
kicked their way to a victory in
the Parade of Champions for the
second year in a row.
This talented and enthusiastic
group of young people is known
as the Allen Eagle Escadrille.
entertainmnet by Mr. Charles
Barton, the dynamic band dir-
ector, and Mrs. Pat King, lovely
head lady of the Tallenettes.
Cheers and congratulations are
in order for all of them. And for
all of us in the Cotton Bowl that
evening, thanks for showing us
the happy and glowing faces of
what winning is all about.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jack Gammel

FIRE PREVENTION Week
got a lot of attention in Allen las t
week with fire-related activities
and that special section honoring
the firemen being published in
The American.
Fire Marshal Bob Acker
dropped by The American to
thank the folks of Allen for their
support.
As for the special edition, it’s
the advertisers in the section
who made it possible. Though
our small staff might not have
been able to contact all the
businesses in town for partici-
pation, the response we received
showed what Allenites think of
our fire department. All wanted
to buy a little space to honor the
firemen.
And these guys—who work free
of charge to help each and every
one of us—certainly deserve our
appreciation.

discomfort in a van when the
weather is very hot or cold. Vans

Once again, it’s the advertisers
who deserve the credit.
The football page is one
example.
There are 28 sponsors on this
page and their support enables
us to cover the games more
thoroughly and to give our
teams the recognition they de-
serve. Putting out newspaper
pages definitely costs money and
without the support of adver-
tisers there wouldn’t be a local
newspaper, much less a football
page.

THIS WEEK, I’m going to
write about nothing.
According to a news release
which ended up on my desk this
week a Dallas firm is now
packaging and selling “noth-
ing.”
“Nothing” the best I can
determine is something like pet
rocks.
According to the release,
“Nothing comes complete with a
certificate of ownership, waranty
and owner’s operating manual.
It is invisible, intangible, odor-
less and tasteless.”
Nothing comes in its own
translucent box and occupies
11.4 cubic inches of space. It can
easily be observed at all times
through the walls of its sparkling
Lucite chamber, which rests
handsomely on a fine wooden
base.
“Nothing is antimagnetic,
rustproof, waterproof, shrink-
proof, fireproof, fadeproof and
corrosion-proof. ’ ’
One of the advantages of giving
Nothing, say the manufacturers,
is that it never has to be
exchanged because of size, color
or model.
The advantages of owning a
Nothing is obvious to me be-

Nothing cures the common
cold...Nothing is safe in the

lower your electric bill.
The manufacturer also is
offering a special discount to the
owners of Pet Rocks. The Pet
Rock owner can get a 50 cent
discount on Nothing provided he
sends the Pet Rock complete
with cage to the company at the
time of ordering. However
though you are buying Nothing
the State of Texas requires that
you pay 5 percent sales tax on it.
