Fireplaces - Fireplaces cause
many home fires at night due to
embers “popping” out onto fur-
niture and carpeting. Make sure
that your fireplace is equipped
with a fire screen with small
enough mesh so that sparks for
the particular type of wood that
you will be burning cannot pop
through. Many of the new homes
being built in Allen are built with
screens installed, but the screens

the most important precautions
you can take is the regular
cleaning or replacement of fur-
nace filters. Filters should be
changed monthly throughout the
winter as unclean filters cause
more than 75 percent of all
furnace fires by reducing the air
flow throughout the unit.

Furnaces - Have your furnace
inspected by a Qualified service
technician at the beginning of
the heating season. The first
long cold night often causes
furnaces to run for long periods
of time resulting in overheated
heat chambers which can crack
and spray flames into your attic
or furnace closet. A check by the

Space Heaters - Install your
electric or gas space heaters
safely in areas where they will
not be likely knocked over.
Never install a space heater next
to curtains, bedding or other
combustionable materals. If you
wish to install an electrical space
heater, make sure that the ap-
pliance is U.L. Listed and has a
safety device which turns the
heater off, should it turn over.
Also check for frayed cords or
defective heating elements be-
fore connecting the heater. Elec-
tric space heaters should be
plugged directly into an outlet
by itself. Never use an extension
cord on these appliances. Gas

leaving the house or going to
sleep at night always either
extinguish the fire completely, or
cover the opening with a glass
type door to keep sparks inside.
Finally, when lighting the fire-

kindling to light the fire.
NEVER, NEVER bring charcoal

Traditionally the arrival of
winter heralds many home fires
with the main reason being long
neglected furnaces, heaters, and
fireplaces being “fired up” for
the first “blue Norther” of the
season.
Each year at this time the Allen
Volunteer Fire Department
gears up for middle of the night
home fires that are usually very
destructive and often cause in-
juries and loss of life. Most, if
not all, of these fires can be
prevented, by the proper main-
tenance and use of heating
appliances. A few of the pre-
cautions which can be taken
include:

We want to make this a safe
winter in Allen for everybody.
The insured fire loss in Allen for
1977 stands at less than $2,000,
which represents a 90 percent
decrease in property fire loss
over previous years. Even more
important, we have had no
serious fire injuries this year.
With each citizen doing his part,
Allen citizens can enjoy a safe
and happy winter.
Smoke Detector - The final
precaution a homeowner can
take to make his home firesafe is
the purchase and installation of
smoke detectors. These inex-
pensive detectors spot small fires
before they become large ones
and insure that the entire family
will have plenty of time to escape
a night time fire. The Allen Fire
Prevention Bureau and the Pub-
lic Library offer a slide and
cassette program at the library
on how to purchase and install a
