RUMORS MAKE life more interesting. We heard one
“rumor” last week which quotes the salary of the mayor
of Allen at $5,000 per year.
Actually, the mayor’s pay is only $50 per month. That
rate which should be raised unless Allen hires a city
manager soon, went into effect back in the 1960’s.
Councilmen get $5 per meeting, which is also too cheap
if they do their homework prior to meetings.

schemes in an effort to solve money
problems, our attorneys suggest that
consumers who find themselves in a
bill-paying bind try the following:
1. Call or write the credit manager of
the firms to which you owe the money.
Explain your financial situation and ask
if you may arrange for smaller payments
over a longer period. Most firms will try
to work out a reasonable repayment
schedule with you.
2. If that doesn’t work, shop around for
a bill consolidation loan from a credit
union, bank, savings and loan institution,
or finance company. This will allow you
to pay of all your creditors and repay the
loan in affordable payments. Remember
that you will pay an interest charge on
the loan. It’s important to shop around
KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS know each morning
when they go to school that they are in for a few
surprises.
Mrs. Katherine Watts got her surprise as expected the
other day when she brought a tape recorder to class and
had some of the youngsters recite poems so they could
hear their own voices.
“Mary Had A Little Lamb,” “Little Boy Blue” and
“Humpty Dumpty” were the favorites. Some of the young
folks were too shy to say even a word.
Not Christi Foster. She wasn’t bashful in the least. In
fact, she gave more of a performance than a voice check.
Little Christi went through, word by word, the song
“Delta Dawn”. And she didn’t miss a syllable.

IT WILL PROBABLY be several weeks before the
Railroad Commission gives its final decision on the suit
filed by Lone Star Gas to boost gas rates about 34 percent
in Allen.
But regardless of the outcome, citizens can be sure the
city did all it could to halt the hikes. Our city councilmen
deserve a special word of thanks for their extra efforts.
Last week, all 6 members of the council took time off
their jobs to spend 2 days in Austin and give Alien’s side
of the rate case. They went without pay and most had to
use up 2 days of vacation time to make the trip.
It wasn’t a joy ride. And except for a quick meal at EI
Mat, there was little time for relaxation.
The attorney in Austin wasn’t enthusiastic about Allen’s
chances before the hearing. But he was much happier
after all the testimony was presented.
Even if the full rate hike is granted by the commission,
Allen natural gas users will have benefitted from the
Austin trip.
First, the rate hike will be delayed a while longer...and
this is supposedly the coldest period of the year. Second,
service should definitely improve as the company tries a
little harder to keep from having to go before the
commission next time they need higher rates to make a
“fair” profit.

Dear Mr. Lowman,
Thank you for your letter
concerning the closing of
the Allen payment agency.
We at Southwestern Bell
are aware of the fast
growing pace of Allen and
do plan to service all of our
Allen customers with the
best possible service for
the least amount of money.
All payment agencies in
the McKinney area were
closed effective January
31, 1976. While Allen is a
fast growing community,
only a small percentage of
the Allen customers were
paying their bills at the
local payment agency.
Only 19.2 percent of our
customers in Allen were
paying at the agency,
compared to the already
low 22.9 percent group
average.
I know the additional
money for postage may be
difficult, especially for
people on low incomes;
however, all customers in
Allen have been paying for
services that only a few
customers utilized.
Mrs. A.D. Poteet com-
pleted thirty hours of
special training with the
National Association of
REALTORS at the North
Park Inn last week. Mrs.
Poteet is affiliated with
Chumbley Realtors here in
' Allen and is a very busy
lady. In addition to her
work as a realtor she is a
busy wife and homemaker.
The Poteets drove to
Corsicana on Saturday and
had dinner with their son
and daughter who are in
college at Navarro Junior
College there. They report

service fee, they promise to arrange a
debt repayment play with your creditors
and pay them with the payment you
mailed.
Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
It is. What happens in many cases is that
the “debt adjustor” charges a hefty fee
for such services, possibly 25 percent or
more of the payment you send, leaving
very little to divide between your
creditors. He may not contact your
creditors in advance and obtain their
agreement to the extended payment plan,
with the likely result being that you find
overdue charges tacked onto your
accounts. Since your creditors will be
getting less than their minimum
payments, and since they have not
agreed to any different payment plan, you
may find your accounts eventually turned
over to bill collecting agencies.
Our Consumer Protection Division has
received reports from other states that
indicate some “debt adjustors” make no
payments at all to your creditors, but
pocket your entire payment themselves.
And since such- unscrupulous operators
are out-of-state, it may be difficult and
time-consuming to take legal action
against them.
Instead of falling for such illegal

3. Another alternative is to visit a
non-profit consumer credit counselling
service in your community. This might be
the local child and family service agency
affiliated with United Way or a local
affiliate of the National Foundation for
Consumer Credit. These agencies assist
in setting up a budget and family
financial plan, and may arrange extended
payment schedules with creditors, if
needed.
If you have a consumer complaint
about an out-of-state “debt adjusting”
firm, contact our Attorney General’s
Consumer Protection Division or your
county or district attorney.

With living expenses rising and those
holiday bills still rolling in, some
consumers find their monthly outgo for
payments may be nearing or occasionally
exceeding their income.
Some, overwhelmed by the problem, -
may begin to look for ways to ease the
financial burden. They may see
newspaper or magazine ads for “budget
counselling,” “debt consolidation,” or
“debt adjusting” firms which promise to
“pay all your bills and leave you plenty
of living expenses—and extras, too!”
Our Attorney General’s Consumer
Protection Division attorneys caution that
such “debt consolidation” firms are
illegal in Texas, but note that there are
many out-of-state “debt adjustors”
operating by mail.

During my experience in
