Washington, D. C.—Idleness in the
coal industry is reflexed in the decreas-'.

than in any year since 1903, according
to the federal bureau of mines.
Information from all state mine in-

New York, N. Y.—“There has been
a lot of thoughtless talk about class
legislation on behalf of the farmer,”
said Henry C. Wallace, secretary of
agriculture, in a speech in this city:
“The fact is,” he said, “that all the
so called farm legislation of the past
year has been of just as much benefit
to all classes of people as it is to the
farmer. Any legislation which will
help put farming back on to a fairly
prosperous basis will be helpful to ev-
erybody. It is not a question of giving
the farmer any special favors. He
does not ask them. It is simply a
question of putting about 40 per cent
of our people in a position to help
themselves.”

Wilmington, Del.—Short hours is an
antidote for the monotonous employ-
ment on automatic machinery, said
Miss Mary McDowell of Chicago in a
speech in this city.
“The old creative interest of mak-
ing something has no longer a place in
the modern industrial worker’s scheme
of things,” she said. “Each worker
has an infinitely small part in making
the article and this part is done over
and over again, thousands of timnes
during the day, with an automatic ma-
chine.
“This sameness and lack of mental
stimulation causes a numbness of the
mind, which will, in time, cause the
worker to deteriorate.”
The speaker said that the remedy
for this condition is shorter hours.
“We must shorten hours for the in-
dustrial worker. This applies espe-
cially to women,” she said.

“OPEN” SHOP IS FAKE.
New Yor”.—“A national prosperity”
movement is now under way. Its pur-
pose will be to induce people to spend
money freely—that is, those who have
it to spend. The promoters say the
recent “thrift campaign” was “had for
business” and the people now need
stimulating to overcome the narcotic
of the “thrift” idea. Some of these
forward looking saviors who were
beating the tom-toms for thrift have
been inducted into the “prosperty”
army. They now explain that the
thrift campaign was not wholly con-
cerned with saving money only—“wise
saving.” it is called. The''movement
related to “thrift of money, thrift of
time and thrift of life.” All of which
clarifies the situation.
